Mike Losness competing for Saddleback College made his first appearancein the NSSA since his final triumph at the 1999 Nationals where hescored his third National title, while Mira Costa College cleaned housecollecting a massive 163-point total.

The 2001/02 Southwest Conference College Season continued with event #3at Ponto Beach in Carlsbad. The surf was a stormy but contestable 2-4feet. The prospects for some awesome surfing were high when three timeNational Champion Mike Losness was added to the Saddleback roster.Losness, 21 from San Clemente was a Nationals star back in the latenineties where he racked up three titles in three straight years. Hescored back-to-back Open titles winning the 1997 National Open Juniorsdivision and then pulled off a huge victory in the Open Mens division in1998. In 1999, he took the High School Mens crown and led San ClementeHigh School to their first National title in 17 years. With three yearsof professional surfing experience and traveling under his belt, Mikewas surfing stronger than ever. Mike delivered for Saddleback winningevery heat on his way to taking a unanimous first place judges decisionin the College Mens final. The victory touched off a celebration forSaddleback who is a new college on the scene in NSSA competition. Theyended up taking third place overall-their best result of the season,while taking down top gun schools such as defending National ChampionCal State Long Beach, multi National champion UCSD, USD and San DiegoState.

All eyes might have been on the Losness comeback, but Mira Costa Collegeruled the event amassing an incredible 163 total points to take theirsecond victory of the year. Second place UC Santa Barbara collected 115points and Saddleback scored 106. The defending National Champs CalState Long Beach slipped to a disappointing 4th place with 90 points.Three of six Mira Costa team members made the Mens final with MikeKlein, Dave Baughman and Rodger Eales taking third, fourth and fifthplace respectively. Karlene Wiegand of Mira Costa took her thirdconsecutive victory in the Collegiate Womens division.

Mira Costa will compete for the Southwest Conference Collegiate titlethis coming Sunday, February 24, as they do battle against No. 2 rankedand defending conference champion UC Santa Barbara. This should be agreat matchup. We must not forget that UC Santa Barbara scored awhopping 162 points at College event #1 so the heat is on. Event #4this Sunday in Huntington Beach will conclude the 2001/02 SouthwestCollege Season. The top 18 ranked schools will then advance to theCollege State Championships at Church Beach on March 16-17.

COLLEGE EVENT #4 AT HUNTINGTON BEACH 9TH STREET! The season finale forthe 2001/02 Southwest College Season will take place on Sunday, February24 at 9th Street in Huntington Beach.
