September’s Model Search was no easy month. It seemed like the summer heat just continued right into the month. But when it came down to it one lady stuck out in our minds most. That lady is Miss Leila Thomas, 19-years-0ld and from the island of Oahu. She’s currently majoring in English at the University of California Santa Barbara in hopes of becoming a surf journalist. She spends her free time surfing, hiking, modeling, working on the Surf4Hugs event on Oahu, and of course living it up in Santa Barbara. She also just started a blog thats dedicated to non-profit organizations that are concerned with ocean and surf preservation, check it out at wavepatrol.wordpress.com. Don’t fall too hard fellas…
How did you hear about the TransWorld SURF Model Search?
Leila: My cousin reads the magazine religiously finally convinced me to send in some photos.
South Shore, in da 808
When did you start surfing?
It was a requirement of my dads that his kids would grow up doing ocean sports. He started teaching me tandem when I was four.
Where’s your local spot on Oahu?
Kaikos or Populars
Goofy or regular?
If you could go on a surf trip anywhere in the world, where would it be?
To visit my brother in Bali! He recently moved there and I’d love to do a surf and sailing trip for my next adventure.
Why did you choose to go to UCSB?
Good people, good surf, good weather. And we have late night Super Cucas ranchero burritos.
What do you want to become a surf journalist?
I spend my free time reading, writing, and being outside in nature.
When can you begin your internship at TransWorld SURF?
When you say “living it up in Santa Barbara” what does that mean?
Spending time with friends most definitely. I’m lucky cause they’re always down to go camping or spend the day at the beach. Life’s too short to live the same day twice.
Do you ever run into Bobby Martinez up there?
What’s the “Surf4Hugs” event you work for on Oahu?
My brother and I started the event in 2004. We work with the nonprofit organization HUGS and local sponsors to teach children with life-threatening illnesses how to surf down at Baby Queens. It gives families a chance to spend a day together down at Waikiki beach with ono food and company.
Got a boyfriend?
No. I’m enjoying being single. My one requirement is he has to surf better than me.
Last dirty joke you told?
What did the Left Nut say to the right nut? Don’t talk to the guy in the middle he’s a dick!
