Mitch Parkinson Off To Bells Beach After Winning The National Rip Curl GromSearch
Gold Coast – Queensland: Thursday, 16th December, 2010: It was a double dose of Mitch Parkinson and Ellie-Jean Coffey at today’s 2010 Rip Curl GromSearch national final presented by Air Asia and Power Balance, with the radical Parkinson and powerful Coffey dominating proceedings in the premier 16 and Under Boys & Girls divisions.
Parkinson qualified for today’s national final, which was held in 0.5m waves at Southport Spit (Gold Coast, Qld) after winning yesterday’s Gold Coast leg of the Rip Curl GromSearch series.
With surfing running through the stylish natural footer’s (left foot forward stance) veins, Parkinson carried his momentum from yesterday’s thrilling victory into today’s prestigious National Rip Curl GromSearch Final, with the victory securing him a place in the international Rip Curl GromSearch, which is run in conjunction with the 2011 Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Victoria.
Parkinson registered a combined two-wave heat total of 17.50 (out of a possible 20) in the final, toppling Jordan Lawlor (North Narrabeen, NSW – 14.00), Joshua Hay (Copacabana, NSW – 13.76) and Kelly Norris (Coolum, Qld – 11.17) who finished second to fourth respectively.
Meanwhile, surfing in a cumulative two-heat final Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW) matched Parkinson’s efforts backing up her win yesterday with victory in the 16 and Under Girls Rip Curl GromSearch National Final.
Coffey registered a cumulative two-heat total of 27.74 (out of a possible 40), toppling Brodie Doyle (Coolangatta, Qld – 24.63), Mikeala Greene (Yallingup, WA – 21.67), Indja Payne (Woolamai, Vic – 19.96) and Zoe Clarke (Bells Beach, Vic – 14.74) who finished second to fifth respectively.
Coffey’s victory also secures her a place in the international Rip Curl GromSearch.
