More Volcom VQS Season Finales

Carlos Cabrero and Brian Toth win tickets to California to compete in the 2nd annual VQS* Championships!

The 5th Annual Catfish was fun for everyone involved! Families showed up with coolers and umbrellas to support their kids and have a weekend on the beach. The event was held January 19th and 20th in 4 foot onshore conditions at Pinones-Aviones (San Juan). The 110 competitors included the Island’s top surfers. The outstanding locals were Carlos Cabrero and Brian Toth. Carlos won the Men’s pro-am division and took 2nd in the airshow. Brian won the Juniors and took 2nd in the Men’s pro-am division. Each of them won airline tickets (compliments of Volcom) to California for the VQS* Championships this March in Newport.

Ozzie Wright won the airshow by blasting big frontside airs on the wedgy lefts. He took home $250.00 for the win. Gavin Beschen put on a strong performance in the airshow, but just fell short of the final. Other standouts include: Boy’s winner Thomas Bursian, double finalist Dylan Graves, and double finalist Leslie Bursian.

On Saturday after the contest we had a “156 Tricks” premier party that went loony!

All finalists qualify for the VQS* Championships March 30th and 31st at 54th St. in Newport Beach, CA. The event will have over $10,000 in prize money up for grabs!

Volcom Stone held the final event of the Blowfish Surf Series at Blacks Beach in San Diego on Jan 26th, 2002. The surf was 1-2ft and not as good as hoped for, but spirits were high and the competition was as good as it gets.

The Grom division has been strong all season and it came down to the top 3 compititors. Jordan Gaudet finished with his first win of the year and racked up 2000 points for the win. Morgan Murphy and Myles Stephens also had a good showing.

The Juniors are showing why San Diego is coming up, Julian Mullins, Matt Feild, and Jason McIlwee battled it out with solid performances but in the end it was Jason McIlwee taking the win.

The Mens Pro-Am is always a crowd favorite and you’ll never know what your going to get. The Darkhorse of the day was Shinji Oki from Japan who seemed prepared for the small surf finishing fourth for the day, taking the win was Rodger Eales with Dylan Slater finishing runner up.
