Notes From The North Shore
Billabong celebrated the opening of their new store in Waikiki on Thursday February 6th. Attendees included World Champ Andy Irons, cover-man Shane Dorian, team riders Jason Shibata, Tory Barron, Daniel Jones, Brian Pacheco, Jamie Sterling, and various Billabong employees. The store is located at 2424 Kalakaua Avenue, just across the street from the Duke Kahanamoku statue. An afterparty was thrown by the very generous Billabong CEO Paul Naude poolside at Duke’s Bar and Grill in downtown Waikiki.
The waves have been quite good. January’s massive surf created sandbars up and down the seven mile miracle. Ehukai has resembled Puerto Escondido at times recently, with plenty of broken and buckled boards. A bodysurfer was on the losing end of a Pipe wipeout resulting in a bloody head, elbow, leg and shoulder. Leucadia visitor and Pipe charger, Doug Aldred was able to get the lifeguards attention before getting pitched himself.
The annual Pipeline Bodysurfing competition has commenced with Mike Stewart taking top honors again. He was followed up by Mark Cunningham, Don King, and Pipeline lifeguard Freddy Ausmus. The event went down in excellent four to six foot Pipe and there were a lot of men in speedos. Enough said.
