Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro Day 2: Brazilian takeover

Morning light on day 2 of the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro revealed another marathon of fun surf at trestles today. The Round 1 heats were completed by mid day, and competition progressed right along until heat 9 of the round of 48.

The standouts of the day were a fair number of the Brazilian contingent, who unleashed in the small, paddle-battle conditions. However, with four man heats and long lulls, a fair number of interferences were handed out to surfers from around the globe today.

Gabriel Medina, Heitor Alves, Willian Cardoso, Alejo Muniz, and Jadson Andre have won 5 of the first 9 heats of the 2nd round. The passionate bunch put together an impressive display of competitive prowess today, mixing excellent surfing with smart heat tactics and wave choice. Hassles and claims aside, there was some amazing surfing executed by the Brazzos. Jadson Andre turned in the heat of the day in the very last one, posting a two wave total of 18.47 out of 20, attacking the lowers lefts with variety of smooth rail work and the tail-high tom-foolery he’s known for. Their collective march into the later round continues.

Several big names fell to the off-and-on swell hitting Lowers today. World tour surfers Tiago Pires, Michel Bourez, Dan Ross, Adriano de Souza, Tom Whitaker, Matt Wilkinson, and Dane Reynolds all met their demise before they could taste round 3. Dane Reynolds’ knee injury seemed to be harshing his mellow, as he was unable to score more than 1.6 points on any of his waves in his 30 minute affair. Apparently his MVP jersey winning slob-air-reverse was the first air he’d done in a long time for a good reason. With the Brazil WCT event starting in a matter of days, you can bet Mr. Reynolds’ health will become a hot topic in the coming days.

Trestles locals Tanner Gudauskas and Kolohe Andino were able to conspire a win over two ripping Brazilians in Adriano de Souza and Pablo Paulino in heat number 3. Tanner managed to nail one of the highest scores of the day, a 9.63 on a right, with a smooth series of backhand sha-wacks. Kolohe put on another cat-like display of futuristic ankle-breaking antics as well, leaving the two South Americans cussing in Portuguese.

Round 2 should get underway again tomorrow morning, and conditions permitting, on into the man-on-man round 3. The swell is expected to be similar but slightly dropping for manana. (thats spanish for tomorrow)
