Wildcards Named For ASP Prime Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro And 5-Star Oakley Pro Junior; Local Trial Will Provide One Remaining Spot into $250,000 Main Event
SAN CLEMENTE, CA (April 29, 2011) — Wildcards have been named for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro and 5-star Oakley Pro Junior. The events, running May 3-7 at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif., have $250,000 cash and a $30,000 14-karat gold spike on the line for the main event and an additional $25,000 for the juniors, not to mention top ASP points.
ASP has named 10-time defending World Champion and current ASP #1 Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, FL), local standout Dane Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA) and young up-and-comer Conner Coffin (Santa Barbara, CA) as wildcards into the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro. Nike’s golden tickets have been gifted to Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA) and Charly Martin (FRA). Coffin and Andino, both still under the age of 21, will serve double duty also surfing in the Oakley Pro Junior.
A local trial of one heat of four surfers will offer one final spot into the main event and round out the 96-man contingent. That heat will include San Clemente’s own former World Tour surfers Shane Beschen, who has claimed event wins at Lowers no less than three times in the past and Chris Ward, as well as, top North American juniors Luke Davis and Ian Crane. The trial will kick off the event on Tuesday, May 3.
Oakley has selected 15-year-old USA Surf Team member Colin Moran (Costa Mesa, CA) and Aussie wunderkind Jack Robinson (AUS) to earn wildcards into the 32-man Oakley Pro Junior field.
Both the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Junior will feature an HD webcast with live video coverage and scoring for all five days of competition with announcers Sal Masekela, Mark Fewell, Dino Andino, Saxon Boucher, Chris Mauro, Brad Gerlach and Jodie Nelson.
The Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro will be televised live and in its entirety in Hawaii on Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s Oceanic SURF Channel 250 and 1250HD.
