No Fear and Hard Rock are teaming up to sponsor the Koastal Kaos Pro Junior at Sunset Beach, January 14-25. This ASP sanctioned 1-Star Junior Pro event will feature approximately 50 top junior competitors, primarily from Hawaii, competing for over $7,000.00 in cash and prizes, plus the opportunity to qualify for next year’s World Junior Championships where they can earn seeding in the ASP World Qualifying Series.
According to contest director, Liam McNamara, the Koastal Kaos Pro Junior presented by Hard Rock is all about supporting Hawaii’s up and coming amateurs and helping them make the transition into pro surfing.
“By sponsoring this event, No Fear and Hard Rock are helping our Hawaii juniors who have their sights set on next year’s Junior World Championship and, ultimately, a career in professional surfing, said McNamara. “The top two competitors from the Junior World Championship earn seeded positions in the WQS. ” That would be a major stepping stone for Hawaii’s junior pros because it is very hard to get into the top 100 on the WQS. Hawaii has a deep pool of exceptional talent coming out of the NSSA and amateur ranks, McNamara added. “Hawaii’s surfing community needs to provide our own events to create more opportunities for these young surfers.
The world-class break at Sunset Beach has once again been selected as the venue for the Koastal Kaos Pro Junior, held last year as the Hard Rock Pro Junior. Contest organizers are hoping for surf in the 6-8 foot range for the 20 and under competitors. Three of the top four finishers from last year’s Hard Rock Pro Junior–Mason Ho, Clay Marzo and John John Florence–are competing in the 2007 World Junior Championships going on this week in Sydney, Australia.
No Fear is committed to supporting amateur surfing and creating a better bridge between amateur and professional surfing. In addition to serving as the title sponsor of the NSSA’s East Coast, West Coast and National Championship Series, the company sponsors the Koastal Kaos Amateur Surf Series in California and Hawaii. The top two surfers in the Koastal Kaos Amateur Surf Series’ Open Men’s Division and the top Junior competitor will earn wild cards in the 1-Star Koastal Kaos WQS event May 7-11 at Oceanside Harbor in California.
