GOVERNOR’S CUP TROPHY TO BE AWARDED AT NSSA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (May 7) The National Surfing Championships are coming to town,
June 23¿30, 2001, and for the first time ever, the California State Department of Parks and Recreation will be working with the National Scholastic Surfing Association to initiate the First Annual Governor’s Cup Award. The events will be held at the Lower Trestles area within San Onofre State Beach Park. The “Governor’s Trophy” will be awarded to the champions of the National Open Men’s and Open Women’s divisions. “The NSSA is honored to be selected as the first athletic organization to present the prestigious Governor’s Cup at our National Championships,” said Janice Aragon, NSSA Executive Director. “This inaugural event is all the more meaningful because the NSSA National Championships will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary at Lower Trestles, one of the premier surf breaks in the world.”
“For State Parks, this is likewise an honor,” said the Director of the State Department of Parks and Recreation, Rusty Areias. “We have nearly 300 miles of California’s 1,200 mile Coastline,” said Areias, “and within that 300 miles there is some of the best surfing anywhere in the world. And so we are delighted to form this new relationship with the National Scholastic Surfing Association and raise the top award to the level of a prestigious Governor’s Cup.”
The “Governor’s Cup” is a series of premier athletic events exclusive to the California State Park system. The NSSA National Championships has been chosen to serve as the pilot project of the series.
The NSSA National Championships will be held June 23-30. The National Interscholastic Championships will be held June 23-24 at Salt Creek in Dana Point. The National Open and Explorer Championships will be held June 26-30 at Lower Trestles in the San Onofre State Beach. The State of California “Governor’s Cup” competition will begin on June 28 in association with the National Open Men’s and Women’s divisions. The National Championship and Governor’s Cup finals will be held on June 30. Presentation of the NSSA National Champions and Governor’s Trophy will take place at the 23rd annual NSSA National Awards Banquet July 1 at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott in Dana Point.
