APRIL 15-18, 2004
SEBASTIAN INLET, FLORIDA

Fabulous Sebastian Inlet came through once again for the twelfth annualNSSA Eastern Championships. Consistent wind and ground swell producedgood 2-5 foot waves for four straight days. A record number ofcompetitors, close to 500 were on hand to battle it out for coveted NSSARegional titles. The NSSA also followed suit with the Nationals andwent digital for the first time in Regional Championship history addingcomputer scoring to the event. The NSSA will continue to use computerscoring and tabulation on the Regional and National Championship level. The computer system provides the utmost in scoring and professionalefficiency much to the benefit of both the competitors and the crowd.Surfers and College Teams from the NSSA’s four east coast conferences,Southeast, Southeast/North, Northeast and Florida Gulf, were invited tothe Eastern Championships with the hopes of qualifying for a prestigiousslot in the upcoming NSSA Nationals June 18-26.

Jeremy Johnston is no stranger to making Easterns finals. Since hisfirst appearance in the division in 1997 where he claimed his first NSSAchampionship title in the Mini Grom division, Jeremy has made 15 finalsand won of four of them. He also has two National titles under his beltwinning the Open Juniors in 2003 and the High School Men’s last year.In his final year as an amateur, Jeremy was on a mission to finish itout on the east coast with a victory in the Open Men’s. Competing inthree divisions, Open Men’s, Explorer Men’s and Explorer Juniors, itappeared that he was fully capable of pulling a Brian Toth maneuver oflast year snagging all three titles. However in both Explorer finals,Jeremy had to settle for runner up behind the strong performance ofSterling Spencer in the Men’s and the explosive surfing of Dylan Gravesin the Juniors. But when everything was on the line, everything cametogether for Jeremy in the prestigious Open Men’s final. He not onlyanswered back, he sent a message to everyone and anyone who was watchingand listening. He practically owned the final from the get-go nailing a6.67 score within a matter of minutes. The other five finalists, EricRheaume, Eric Geiselman, Gabriel Escudero, Dylan Graves and RylanMcCart, would have to fight their way back into contention. Rheaume, who was appearing in his first NSSA championship final, answeredJohnston back with an identical 6.67 to keep it within reach. Rheaumeearned the Southeast/North Conference’s Most Improved Surfer award thisseason and it was definitely clear by his surfing display at this year’sEasterns. However, Jeremy threw the gauntlet down midway through theheat with an 8.0 score. In the final five minutes, Rheaume needed a7.85 score to take the lead with the remaining four finalists trailingfurther behind. He nailed a 6.83 score, the second highest of thefinal, but it wasn’t the magic score needed. Game, Set, Match toJohnston. Now with the Eastern Open title under his belt, Jeremy willtake aim in June to finish out his youth career on the highest of notesat the NSSA National Championships.

MORE NSSA EASTERNS HIGHLIGHTS: After a year championship drought, AdamWickwire, broken arm and all, clinched his NSSA Eastern title in theOpen Juniors division in a photo finish over Eric Geiselman. Geiselmanopened up the final with a solid 6.83 score and backed it up withanother good 6.33. He was in a comfortable lead until Wickwire camestorming back in the final minutes nabbing an excellent 7.33 score. With seconds ticking, Wickwire unleashed three good turns on alefthander earning a 6.0, enough to take the lead and the victory fromGeiselman by a slim 0.17 margin. Evan Geiselman staked his claim on notone, not two, but three divisions in the Open Mini Groms, Open Boys andExplorer Menehuene divisions. The ten yearld from New Smyrna may be”Grom Sized” but he put on a “Shaq Sized” performance matching BrianToth’s record shattering three-title triumph in 2003. Evan now hasearned a total of four Eastern titles (he won the Mini Groms in 2003).The record for NSSA Regional titles (includes East, West and Hawaii) iseight set by Eric Taylor. If Evan stays at this pace, that record couldbe shattered sooner than we think. We’ll keep counting, because Evan’sgot a lot of NSSA years left! In the Women’s division Kristin Wilsonstepped it up and clinched her first prestigious Open championshipcrown. Former National Open Women’s Champion Karina Petroni was favoredto take the title but basically fell out of contention when she got aninterference call early in the final. In the Open Longboard division,Tony Silvagni successfully defended his 2003 Easterns title.

HIGH SCORING HEAT TOTALS/WAVES OF THE 2004 EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS:Jeremy Johnston might have put down the gauntlet in the Open Men’s finalbut a much improved Dylan Graves made his presence known in a starstudded Open Men’s repercharge which featured Graves, Eric Geiselman,Jeremy Johnston, Sterling Spencer, Steve Owens and Blake Jones. Gravesturned the heat on with an electrifying performance collecting a 17.00heat score based on a two-wave total. Evan Geiselman lit his own firein the Open Mini Grom final tying Dylan’s high point totals with a 17.00score. The wonder grom from New Smyrna also earned the highest scoringwave of the championship destroying a Sebastian nugget, which earned anear perfect 9.0 score from the judges.

O’NEILL NSSA AIRSHOW CHAMPIONSHIPS: Sebastian flight conditions for theO’Neill Airshow Championships consistently produced good ramps for oureast coast aerialists. In the final, Eric Geiselman opened up with agood rotation but the score came at a fair 4.83 because it didn’t havemuch in the amplitude department. Meanwhile, Brady McKenzie strokedinto a good looking right, gained tons of speed down the runway and thenlaunched a clean three-foot standard air. Scores came in for Brady at5.67. 2003 Eastern Air Champ Jesse Heilman pulled a nice double grab180 rotation but the wave was small, so there was not much boost power.Brady, Jesse, Eric, Eddie Guilbeau, Mark Dawson and Steve Owens willlead the eastern airborne charge at the 2004 O’Neill National AirshowChampionships at Salt Creek on June 18-19 joining the top six from theWest and Hawaii.

HOBGOOD MOST INSPIRATIONAL GROM AWARD: In annual NSSA Easternstradition, former NSSA National and Eastern Champions CJ Hobgood andDamien Hobgood presented an authentic Hobgood surfboard to the grom whoput on the most inspirational performance of the championships. It wasa no brainer that this year’s Hobgood award would go to Evan Geiselmanfor his big league surfing display in three divisions.

COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: In the collegiate championships, the UCF surfteam clinched its seventh career Eastern title just edging out FSU by ascore of 64-63. Both teams came out swinging advancing four of theirsix man squads out of round one. FSU’s Jon Warren and UCF’s ShamonBurton were the only one’s left standing for the finals. Warren tookfourth and Burton took fifth. Flagler’s Henry Martin dominated theCollege Men’s competition winning all of his preliminary rounds on theway to his first NSSA championship triumph in the final. In the specialteams department, UCF took advantage with Lauren McLean from the ‘B’team clinching the victory and Kristen Wilson from the ‘A’ team takingthird. UCF also dominated the Bodyboard division with ‘B’ teamer JustinWalter winning it and ‘A’ team member Josh Hoilman taking third. FSUteam member Chris Wessels came back to triumph in the Longboard final.
