NSSA SOUTHWEST COLLEGE SEASON EVENT #1
VENTURA C STREET “PIPES”
OCTOBER 28, 2001

The 2001/02 Southwest Conference College Season got the show on the road with a record 25 teams competing. A much-appreciated increase in the NW swell on Sunday delivered fun 2-3’+ waves. Defending ConferenceChampions UC Santa Barbara opened up the new campaign with a 162-147 win over rival and defending StateChampion Mirra Costa. The defending National Champion Cal State Long Beach team finished up in third with110 points. Tying for 4th was the always-competitive UC Santa Barbara Vector (B) team and the newly revampedCal State San Marcos with 96 points. High-ranking NSSA Open and Explorer Season surfers Chris Abad andMike Klein proved too tough for the competition and took 1st and 2nd respectively. Chris got off to a fast startripping an almost perfect 9.5 score. He backed that up with an excellent 8.5 and another good 6.5 score for a 24.5total. Mike scores came in at 8.5, 8.0 and 7.0 for a 23.5 total. Chris and Mike are new additions to the alreadypotent Mira Costa team. However Coach Rich Langen chose to place Mike on their Red or “A” team and Chrissurfed for the White or “B” team, which could have made the difference in this event. UC Santa Barbara alsoplaced two separate team members in the Mens final. Nic Galati, competing for the UCSB Vector or “B” teamtook 3rd and Bart Templeman surfing for the UCSB Victor or “A” team took 4th. Scott Meyer of Cal State LongBeach took 5th and Sam Baugh of U of San Diego came in 6th. It appears that this is going to be a repeat of lastseason with the top three teams battling for the championship titles. But you can’t count out the much-improvedCal State San Marcos with team members Dave Kincannon and Chris Darrah and the U of San Diego team withskillful surfers Dylan Slater and Sam Baugh.

In other collegiate divisions, Mira Costa’s Karlene Wiegand won the Womens, UC San Diego’s Ryan Eckhofftook the Longboard with a perfect “10” wave score and Cal State Long Beach’s Manuel Melian scored thevictory in Bodyboard.
