NSSA SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE OPEN SEASON EVENT #33 STAR RATED-OCTOBER 13/14, 2001 HUNTINGTON BEACH PIER SOUTHSIDECONDITIONS: 4-6′ WITH BIGGER SETS, EXCELLENT SURF
H.B. Surf City once again blessed the NSSA as a pumping Southern Hemiswell delivered excellent 4-6′ waves with bigger sets for the SouthwestConference’s Open Season on October 13 and 14. The hottest youngsurfers on the west coast were treated to epic H.B. conditions for theOpen Season’s third stop on the ten event 2001/02 schedule. Theshowdown of the day came in the Mens final featuring San Clemente’sAndrew Gahan and Travis Mellem, ratings leader Dane Reynolds of Venturaand Carlsbad standout Mike Klein. In the pumping surf, Andrew’s powermoves prevailed giving the San Clemente High School junior his firstOpen victory of the season. Travis Mellem, also a junior at SanClemente High School, took second and regained the lead in the Openratings over Dane Reynolds who placed fourth in the final. Mike Kleincame in third. H.B. locals Brett Simpson and Willie Safreed wereripping in their home turf until falling in the semis. Brett, howeverstepped it up big in the OSMAS airshow event busting a clean, reverse360 to take the win.
In the Open Juniors division, Alex Gray, 15 from Rancho Palos Verdes wasclearly delighted in taking his first win of the season. Afterdominating the Explorer Boys and winning the Western Championships lastyear, Alex was seemingly this season’s Open Junior frontrunner. However, he started the season off slowly with a couple of early roundupsets in events #1 and #2. The victory will move Alex to third in theratings and within fighting distance for the conference title with SealBeach’s Chris Waring who owns a 1,000-point advantage. Chris gave Alexa run for the money in the final and took second in a very closedecision. Chris, a freshman at Huntington Beach High School, hasn’tmissed a final so far this season. Brandon Ragenovich of San Clementetook 3rd and Marty Liening of Oxnard took 4th in his first Open finalappearance of the season.
Ventura’s Cory Arrambide is keeping his tremendous winning streak alivetaking his third consecutive Open Boys victory. He also has three winsin the Menehuene division of the Gold Coast Conference, which adds up tosix total on the year. Most NSSA history buffs know that the recordwins in a season belongs to Michael Taras who won 20 events inthe1997/98 season. That will be a difficult achievement to surpass butwe’ll keep an eye on Cory’s progress! Chris Slayter took runner up forthe third contest in a row, H.B. local Tommy Steury took third and BrentReilly came in fourth.
The strong, sweeping current and double overhead conditions didn’t holdback our hard charging Mini Groms. Eight-year-old Andrew Doheny fromNewport Beach scored his first ever NSSA win. Ford Archbold came insecond for his best result so far in NSSA competition. Dane Zaun took3rd and Sebastian Becerra came in fourth. Dane Zaun is still the leaderin the ratings, but Andrew is creeping closer trailing Dane by only 150points. The “grom” ratings race will be a fun one to watch.
14-year-old Anastasia Ashley put on a strong performance in the Womensfinal to take her second Open win of the year. Lauren Sweeney tooksecond, Natalee Trefren took 3rd and H.B. local Eva Lewington came infourth. The ratings battle couldn’t get any closer with Anastasia andLauren now tied for first!
OSMAS GOES OFF AT THE OPEN -The second of four OSMAS Southwest Openairshows was held and Surf City produced. The trademark mushy surf ofH.B. was out the window this weekend and the 4-6′ powerful, steep linedup sections provided for some larger than normal launches. HuntingtonBeach High School junior Brett Simpson took home the gold pulling off aclean reverse 360. The victory will now put Brett at the top of theOSMAS ratings.
