Huntington Beach High School senior Brett Simpson surfed brilliantly in the Men’s final to win his second Open event of the 2002/03 season on November 9-10 at Church Beach in San Clemente. A strong early season North Pacific storm produced a healthy 3-5 foot northwest swell, which is ideal for Church Beach. Conditions for Saturday’s prelims were still a bit mixed up from the passing storm system, but clean, glassy head high conditions were on tap for Sunday’s finals.

Simpson took control of the final early on when he picked off a good Church right-hander and lit it up to post a perfect 10. He backed it up with a 6.5 score to nearly combo runner up Julian Mullins who was appearing in his second consecutive final. Ricky Whitlock and Dane Gudauskas took third and fourth respectively both making their first final of the season. Simpson enjoyed a perfect contest winning every heat throughout the weekend. And we have a new leader! Simpson’s victory will put him on top of the ratings over Andrew Gahan who has been holding the number one position since event #2. The race is on!!!

Simpson wasn’t the only one standing out in the long rights of Church Beach. Chad Compton was in a zone of his own, winning every heat on the way to his first Open win of the season. Chad earned two 7.5 scores, enough to seal the victory. Chad’s strong showing in the final was only overshadowed by his own sensational performance in the Juniors quarters where he posted two perfect 10’s and a 9.0 for a 29.0 total. Current leader Kellen Ellison bowed out in the semis but still maintains a slim ratings lead.

Eleven-year-old Ford Archbold is on a roll. He won his third Open in a row in the Boys division, which moves him into first in the ratings. And what do 10-year-old Andrew Doheny and 16 year old Tommy Lloy have in common? They are both undefeated in Open Season competition. Yes, Andrew has won four straight in the Mini Grom division and Tommy has won four in Longboard! Anastasia Ashley was back on a tear in the Women’s division dominating the final for her second victory of the season.

HIGH SCORING WAVE OF THE EVENT-There were three perfect 10’s in the event. Chad Compton had a masterpiece of a heat in the Juniors quarters where he scored two 10’s and a 9.0 for a 29.0 total. Brett Simpson earned a 10.0 in the Men’s final. Brett would have won O-SMAS on that perfect score when he ended the wave with a flawlessly executed double rail-grab air!
