NSSA SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE OPEN SEASON EVENT #4 3 STAR RATED-NOVEMBER 10-11, 2001 LOCATION: SAN CLEMENTE STATE PARK CONDITIONS: 2-3 FEET, STEEP SHOREBREAK WALLS

After coming off an impressive 2nd place finish at the PSTA Championships last week at Ventura?s C Street, 17year old Nathaniel Curran was well aware that it was time to step up and get the job done in the NSSA OpenSeason. Even though Nathaniel had been enjoying huge success in the Gold Coast Explorer division this seasonwith six victories, he had yet to win an Open event. That would change this weekend at the Open event #4 at SanClemente State Park where he claimed his first victory of the season. Four of the hottest teenagers made it to theOpen Mens final with Nathaniel including Travis Mellem, Brett Simpson and Mike Klein. In semi closed outshorebreak conditions, scattered steep right and lefthanders would come through for the competitors. BrettSimpson opened up strong with an 8.5 ride but didn?t get anything over a 4.0 for the rest of the heat. Travisclosed out the final with a strong 7.5 but it wasn?t enough to overtake Nathaniel who got two good waves in thefinal five minutes averaging an 8.0 and 6.5. Travis will increase his lead in the Open ratings over Dane Reynoldsby 600 points. Andrew Gahan, Brett Simpson and Nathaniel Curran are ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively, trailing by around 1,000 points. They all have a legitimate chance to chase Travis for the lead with a 5 star ratedcontest up next. The 5 star rated Church Beach Open on December 8-9 is worth double points and couldsignificantly tighten up the ratings.

Fifteen-year-old Alex Gray started off slow at the onset of the 2001/02 season, but that is history now. His victoryat this event in the Open Juniors division takes him on a three-event streak. Alex broke his mini-slump at theHuntington Beach Open last month and then went on the following weekend to win the October Explorer at SanClemente Trails. The victory will boost Alex to second in the ratings trailing leader Chris Waring by 300 points. Chad Compton also broke loose this past week, winning his first event of the season at last weekends Gold Coastand then placing 2nd behind Alex in the Open Juniors final. Kory LaPoint and Colin Schildhauer made their firstOpen finals of the year and placed 3rd and 4th respectively.

Cory Arrambide remains unstoppable in the victory department winning his 4th consecutive Open Boys final. The12 year old from Ventura is still undefeated in NSSA competition in both the Southwest Open Boys and GoldCoast Explorer Menehuene divisions. Cory now owns ten wins on the season, which is ten shy of tying the 20,win record set by Michael Taras in the1997/98 season. Chris Slayter took runner up for the fourth contest in arow, Mini Grom Dane Zaun took 3rd and Tommy Steury took 4th.

Dane Zaun scored the win in the Mini Grom division for his third win of the season. Andrew Doheny took 2ndfollowed by Sebastian Becerra in 3rd and Jesse Steelman 4th.

14-year-old Erica Hosseini put on a strong performance in the Womens final to take her first ever NSSA victory. Ratings leader Lauren Sweeney took second for the third contest in a row, Karlene Wiegand took 3rd and NataleeTrefren took 4th. Lauren and Anastasia Ashley were tied in the ratings prior to this event however Anastasia wasupset in the semis so Lauren will jump out in front by 250 points.
