NSSA SOUTHWEST EXPLORER EVENT #2TRAILS BEACH, SAN ONOFREOCTOBER 20-21, 2001

A clean 2-4′ southwest swell made for some fun waves for the SouthwestExplorer #2 at Trails Beach in San Onofre. Over 300 surfers competed inten divisions ranging from the 12 and under Menehuenes to the 45 and upSuper Seniors. Conditions were beautiful for Sunday’s finals withglassy conditions and a building swell with rippable lefts and rights.

Carlsbad High School senior Jason Franco clinched his second consecutivevictory in the Explorer Mens division. Jason just edged out fellowCarlsbad local Mike Klein by a half point with a score of 20.5-20.0.Explorer Juniors rookie Alex Gray stepped it up in the final and scoreda decisive 22.5-19.5 victory over Darrell Goodrum. Alex opened thefinal up with a huge 9.0 score and backed it up with a 7.0 and a 6.5.Huntington Beach kids came in one-two in the Boys division with IanEkberg taking the win and Bert Farley coming in second. Ian was beamingwhen he accepted his first place trophy and no wonder-this was his firstwin in the Boys division! On top of that, Ian moved into first in theratings over Jensen Hassett. That race will be a battle to the finish!H.B. local grom Tommy Steury is dominating the Explorer Menehuenes.Tommy scored his second consecutive victory in the Menehuene final!Tommy now owns a near 900-point lead in the ratings. National SeniorsChampion Chas Wickwire enjoyed a perfect performance scoring doublevictories in both the hotly competitive Masters division and Seniorsdivision. Chas scorched the Seniors final with his three scoring wavescoming in at 9.0, 8.0 and 7.0 for a 24.0 heat total over runner MikeLamm’s 17.0. The result was much closer in the Masters final with Chastaking the win over Barry Deffenbaugh by a score of 19.5-18.0. Chasextended his lead in the Seniors division and moved into third in theMasters behind leader Greg Browning and Barry Deffenbaugh. That’ssetting up to be a hotly contested race. Dwight “Doc” Strayer claimedhis second straight win at Trails in the Super Seniors division. “Doc”ripped a wave, which came in at 7.5 and backed it up with a 6.5 and5.5. The Super Seniors race has tightened up with defending championPatrick Schlick maintaining a slim 330-point lead over Dwight. In theWomens division Amber Puha took the win over Anastasia Ashley. Amberruled the final with solid frontside surfing on the long lefts andpulled down a couple of high 8.0 and 7.0 scores. 22.5-20.0 win over Cyrus Sutton.
