NSSA SOUTHWEST EXPLORER EVENT #5

CONDITIONS: 3-5 FOOT RIGHTS AND LEFTS
Brett Simpson was unstoppable in his local turf taking his secondvictory in a week, while Sean Taylor and Marty Weinstein clinch theirfirst wins of the 2001/02 season.
The Southwest Conference Explorer Season event #5 was held January 12-13on the south side of Huntington Beach pier. Consistent waves of 3-5feet powered by a nice northwest swell came through for both days of thetwo-day event. The event was five star rated and worth valuable doublepoints for the more than 300 competitors participating. This contestwas the 5th of the 10 event Explorer Season schedule.
The standout of the event had to be 16-year-old Huntington Beach HighSchool junior Brett Simpson. After coming off a win at the OceansideExplorer last month and clinching his first big win in the Open Mensdivision last weekend at Seaside Reef, Brett took command of both hishome court and the Juniors division. He won every preliminary heat onhis way to the final where he pulled out all the stops to take aunanimous first place judges decision. Pat Gudauskas is on a tearhimself. After coming off an impressive third place showing at theSeaside Open, Pat put on another strong performance taking second behindSimpson. Huntington Beach High School senior Willie Safreed also had agood showing taking third in the Juniors final and runner-up in theMens. Thanks to the double points awarded, Brett will now soar to anear 900 point ratings lead over Travis Mellem who took sixth in thefinal.
Sean Taylor was another double finalist clinching his first win of theseason in the Mens division and taking fourth in the Juniors final. Thefinal boosted Sean to second overall in the ratings and trailing leaderJason Franco by a mere 80 points.
The highlight of the contest had to be the awesome surfing performanceby 13-year-old Marty Weinstein in the Boys final. In the final, Martyhad his hands full with Boys ratings leader Jensen Hassett, #2 rated IanEkberg and current #1 ranked Open Junior Chris Waring. But apparentlyhis talented opponents did not intimidate Marty. He busted out themoves on two waves, which scored in the excellent range-a 9.0, and an8.0 ride to clinch his first ever win in NSSA competition!
FOG DELAYS SEVEN FINALS- Despite how good the waves were, Mother Naturethrew us a wrench when a miserable blinding fog came in and forced thecontest into a three hour delay. Seven division finals includingMenehuene, Masters, Seniors, Super Seniors, Womens, Longboard andBodyboard had to be postponed and will be made up at the next Explorercontest which is event #6 at Oceanside Pier. The seven finals will beheld on Sunday, January 27.
COMING UP-Gold Coast Conference event #7 will be held this Saturday,January 19 at Morro Rock. The Santa Cruz event #6 makeup will be heldSunday, January 20 at Morro Rock. OSMAS-Gold Coast #3 will be held onSunday, January 20 at Morro. The Southwest Explorer Season event #6will be held January 26-27 at Oceanside Pier.
