A little rain and wind did not dampen the performance of PatrickGudauskas who has a two event Explorer Juniors win streak going whileNSSA grom phenom Cory Arrambide claims number 17!

The Southwest Conference Explorer Season event #7 was held February16-17 at Ponto Beach in Carlsbad. A passing front made for stormy 2-4foot waves with some occasional rippable clean faces. The event wasthree star rated with more than 300 competitors participating. Thiscontest was the 7th of the 10-event Explorer Season schedule.

The buzz around the Southwest Conference lately is how good PatrickGudauskas has been surfing. His victory in the Juniors division thisweekend is the second straight for the San Clemente High Schoolsophomore and two time National champion. Coming into the event Patrickwas ranked third and despite remaining in third after this event, hewill inch closer to second ranked Travis Mellem and ratings leader BrettSimpson who took third and fourth respectively in the final. ExplorerBoys competitor Jensen Hassett might have been a bit disappointed thatthe contest was relocated to Ponto from his local beloved Seaside Reefbut that did not diminish his solid performance throughout the weekend,especially in the final which he won with an excellent 8.5 point ride.Jensen will move back into first in the Boys ratings ahead of ChrisWaring who placed fourth in the final. NSSA super grom Cory Arrambideearned a near perfect 9.5 score in the Menehuene final and cruised tohis 17th victory of the season. Cory now needs three more to tie andfour to break the 20-win record set by Michael Taras. Dan Fennellclaimed his first win of the year in the Mens division. Carlsbadneighbors Jason Franco and Sean Taylor, who took fourth and third in thefinal respectively, are battling for the title with Sean trailing byless than 300 points. Chas Wickwire bagged another victory in theSeniors division, which brings his season total to seven counting thetwo wins in the Masters division. Greg Browning took the Masters finaland moved back into first in the ratings.Defending National Champ John Silver tookthe Super Seniors final and moved into first in the ratings with PatrickSchlick dropping to second. Trevor Ellis won the Bodyboard division forhis third victory of the season. Amber Puha won her second of the yearin the Womens division but still trails leader Anastasia Ashley bynearly 1,000 points.

COMING UP-The 2001/02 College Season finale will take place at H.B. 9thStreet on February 24. The Gold Coast Conference will conclude the2001/02 season with event #9 at Ventura C Street Pipes on March 2.
