SOUTHWEST EXPLORER SEASON EVENT # 1 FIVE STAR RATEDNINTH STREET, HUNTINGTON BEACH, SEPTEMBER 14-15, 2002
The Southwest Conference 2002/03 Explorer season got underway atHuntington Beach Ninth Street sandbar in small 1-2 foot shorebreakpeaks. The less than favorable conditions didn’t dampen the performanceof Kauai native Chris Satterfield who cleaned up in the highlycompetitive Explorer Juniors division. After a couple shaky earlierrounds, Chris turned it up in the final to take a unanimous judgesdecision. Chris, who came off an impressive fourth place finish lastweekend in the Southwest Open Season, is surfing NSSA events in bothHawaii and the Southwest Conference to prepare for the 2003 Nationals.H.B. local Logan Strook using a little home court knowledge scored asuper impressive victory in the Boys division over Tanner Gudauskas.Other H.B. locals coming out on top were Dan Fennell in the Mens, DarrenMoody in the Bodyboard and Sean MacDonald in the Seniors taking outdefending champion Chas Wickwire. National Champion Patrick Schlick, not resting on his accolades of last season, came fired up and ready andtook the Super Seniors win. Last weekend’s Open Boys runner up BrentReilly took it all the way this time in the Menehuene final. Tommy Witttook the Longboard victory to no ones surprise after he pulled off thelongboard manuever of the event-a critical helicopter move in theshorebreak in the semi finals. Colleen Mehlberg took her first NSSASouthwest victory over Erica Hosseini and National High School ChampionStephanie Cadman.
HIGH SCORING WAVE OF THE EVENT-In his quarter-final heat, HuntingtonBeach High School Sophomore Chris Waring scored an almost perfect 9.5from every judge. And what’s more amazing is Chris was riding hisdad’s board! Chris’ normal 6’0″ board wasn’t cutting it so he asked hisdad if he could ride his thicker 6’1″ in his round one first heat and hewon it! In the Juniors quarters, Chris bottom turned into good littlewedge followed by three straight up lip bashes, a little H.B. shampooand another lipper earning the excellent 9.5 score. Chris’ dad Scottwas on the beach coaching and we know he’s giving Chris some pointers. After all, Scott is a former NSSA Southwest Open Mens champ, the PSTAhead judge and he just finished judging the top 44 WCT surfers atLowers!
