2002 NSSA WESTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS
HUNTINGTON BEACH PIER SOUTH SIDE
MAY 17-19, 2002
CONDITIONS: 3-5 FEET

The top young surfers from the West Coast assembled in Huntington Beach to compete at the sixth annual NSSA Western Championships.Over 400 NSSA surfers competed for prestigious Western titles as well as contending for slots to the 2002 National Championships in June at Lower Trestles. The “world renowned” sand bars on the south side of the H.B. pier were in fine shape as a combo of southwest and northwest swells generated fun, contestable surf in the 3-5 foot range throughout the entire three-day marathon event.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SIXTH ANNUAL NSSA WESTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS:

SX YEARS AT THE NSSA WESTERNS! -The NSSA celebrated its sixth year of the Western Championships at legendary H.B. Pier. For the past four years, bombing 8-10 foot south swells have swept through the Westerns, but this year, the competitors were treated to the rippable beach break left and right peaks that “Surf City” is famous for!

SIMPSON FINALLY NAILS FIRST NSSA CHAMPIONSHIP-It was only a matter of time before 17-year-old Brett Simpson would claim his first NSSA championship crown. Brett, the #3 seed in the Open Mens division, was one of the favorites coming into the event, not only on account of his high ranking, but because of that all so valuable home turf knowledge, especially in the notoriously fickle H.B. conditions. The Huntington Beach High School junior surfs the pier every morning during surf class so he knows every aspect of the pier line-up. Throughout the event, Brett mainly stuck to those right hand peelers next to the pier and it paid off. Three solid rides scoring 7.0, 6.5 and 6.0-clinched Brett his first championship title. Dane Reynolds opened up the heat with a 9.5 score, three blistering backside snaps on a left, but he couldn’t capitalize on it. He didn’t manage anything over a 4.0 for the rest of the heat.

GARLAND, ARRAMBIDE AND ASHLEY TAKE DOUBLE VICTORIES-Who said you have to be an H.B. local to rip at the pier? 15-year-old Kilian Garland of Orcutt, 12-year-old Cory Arrambide of Ventura and 15-year-old Anastasia Ashley of San Clemente owned the infamous south side sand bars. Kilian was killing it on almost every wave he rode. Without a doubt it was his best performance of the year as he gears up to go for his third and fourth National titles. Kilian has two National titles under his belt. He was the1998 Mini Grom and 2000 Open Boys National Champion. Kilian rifled vertical snaps one after another in the Open Juniors final and ditto in the Explorer Boys. Anastasia Ashley spelled double trouble for her rivals in both the Open and Explorer divisions. Cory’s performance at the Westerns established clearly that he is one of the hottest up and coming kids in America. In his opening heat in the Open Boys, Cory lit up on a wave scoring the only perfect 10 of the event. Even ASP WCT judge Tony Sutton who was on the Westerns judging panel, was amazed at Cory’s level! Anastasia Ashley is becoming one seasoned competitor. She was put to the test in the final moments of the prestigious Open Womens final when she needed a 4.5 score to overtake Lauren Sweeney who was holding the lead. With nearly a minute left, a set came through and Anastasia rode a beautiful south side left from start to finish collecting a 6.85 from the judges-more than enough to clinch the gold.

HOMETOWN LOCAL TOMMY STEURY PUTS ON A MOST INSPIRATIONAL PERFORMANCE-It was just two short weeks ago that 12-year-old Tommy Steury was hospitalized with a pretty serious case of appendicitis. He even had to miss the last two crucial double rated Open and Explorer events of the regular season. But kids have a way of bouncing back and Tommy was gung ho to get back in water and put on that NSSA contest jersey. You would never know that he was out of commission for a couple weeks by the way he ripped his home turf at the pr. He double finaled and took 3rd in the Open Boys and 4th in the Explorer Menehuenes. Way to go Tommy!

BACK-TO-BACK TITLISTS-when you are a defending champion, the heat is on. At the NSSA Easterns, four competitors took back-to-back titles. However at this year’s Westerns, only two surfers rose to the occasion-Barry Deffenbaugh in the Masters division and Anastasia Ashley in the Womens.

OPEN CHAMPIONS DO DOUBLE DUTY-The NSSA Open Season turns out the cream of the crop and the Western Open Champions proved that. Every Open Champion double finaled at the Western Championships! See below

AWESOME PERFORMANCES-MULTIPLE FINALISTS AT THE 2002 WESTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS- The east coasters might have pulled off more back to backs but the west coast triumphed in the multiple finalists category. Twenty-three west coast competitors compared to the east coast’s twenty earned multiple final berths including two triple final performers.

WEST COASTERS BUST BIG AT OSMAS-In undeniably, the best OSMAS event of the year performance wise, Brett Simpson busted out a perfectly executed frontside grab in the OSMAS final to claim his second title of the event. The good 3-5 foot waves provided fantastic airshow conditions for the top 24 youth aerialists on the west coast. Brett may have won the final, but Dane Reynold’s air in the quarterfinals stole the show. Dane launched a huge frontside grab on a set wave. With enormous amplitude, he went into a 180 rotation while holding the grab all the way through. He scored an almost perfect 29 out of 30, the best air of the entire event. Pat Gudauskas, defending National OSMAS Champion Josh Montgomery, Chad Compton and Mike Maurer also made the airshow final and will join Simpson and Reynolds in representing the NSSA West at the 2002 National OSMAS Championships at Salt Creek on June 22-23. The six west coasters will go to battle with the six top aerialists from NSSA Hawaii and NSSA East. Ten thousand dollars in scholarship funds will be split up between the six finalists at the Nationals. Air for dollars! OSMAS is first and only recognized scholastic youth airshow series in America. OSMAS is proudly sponsored by the NSSA, O’Neill and Surfing Magazine.

COMING UP-THE WEEK THAT ALL OF YOUNG AMERICA IS WAITING FOR-THE 24TH ANNUAL NSSA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! THE ACTION WILL BEGIN ON JUNE 22-23 WITH THE NATIONAL INTERSCHOLASTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS AND OSMAS CHAMPIONSHIPS AT SALT CREEK. THEN WE MOVE TO MAGNIFICENT LOWER TRESTLES JUNE 25-29 FOR THE NATIONAL OPEN AND EXPLORER CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE SECOND ANNUAL GOVERNOR’S CUP. WHO WILL CARVE THEIR NAMES INTO NATIONALS HISTORY THIS YEAR???
