O’Neill Grom Prix – Morro Bay

Morro Bay, CA – July 20, 2002. Under gray skies and kelp-filled beaches, the O’Neill Grom Prix #5 was held in three to four foot surf. As the BBQ churned out hot dogs and warmed everyone’s hands, the groms took to the water for a fun day of competition.

“With about twenty fourteen to sixteen year olds showing, we ran one division for the day and it was a blast” says Chris Gallagher, O’Neill’s team captain. “It was a win-win situation because all the kids got to surf twice, and there wasn’t any eliminations until the final; it allowed all the kids to really get a chance at the free wetsuit.”

At the end of the day it was local powerhouse Tom Mowry who walked away with fist place and the free goods. Mowrey’s local knowledge payed off by snagging some of the days longest rides allowing him to connect multiple turns to the beach. Not to be outshined by Mowry, Johnathan Grubbs snagged the prize for Best Move by hoisting a solid front-side air followed by a solid reverse move.
