Sebastian Inlet hosted an action packed Saturday this month with the O’Neill Bragger’s Cup Surf Shop Challenge presented by TransWorld SURF.
October 15th saw building northeast swell with moderate northeast winds….not the best conditions for Sebastian, but as the day wore on the winds let up and the ocean smoothed itself out rather nicely to reveal the true beauty of the Inlet. This year’s event definitely had some top notch teams. 12 invited shops from the Sunshine State were battling for bragging rights, cash, prizes, and a chance at a trip to Hawaii.
The format is simple: only one team surfs at a time in the water and the top wave from each team member comprises the heat score. As a team, you actually don’t know if you’ve advance or not until the last team has surfed a round. The tension runs high all day long. When the dust had settled mid-day, there were 3 teams left for the final: last year’s champs Sunrise Surf Shop, Island Water Sports of Deerfield, and The Surf Station.
The best surf of the day arrived just in time for the finals, and the highest team total of the day happened to be given in the final (coincidence)? The Surf Station from St. Augustine came out on top as the 2005 Florida O’Neill Bragger’s cup victor and Island Water Sports took a close 2nd.
With each team made up of at least 2 employees, the Surf Station seemed to have the most well rounded group. The Surf Station actually decided to go with 3 employees as they are as good at selling product in the shop as they are killing it in the surf. That, along with the addition of team rider and WQS star Gabe Kling, made the difference for the win. Congrats to Surf Station!!!
So now that the nationwide 2005 O’Neill Braggers Cup’s Presented by TransWorld SURF have drawn to a close, who’s the lucky team that gets the Grand Prize trip to Hawaii?! Here’s the scoop: Each winning team from the 3 Bragger’s Cups in 2005 will have their names put into a hat this Friday, October 28th and a name will be drawn.
Now that the Florida Bragger’s Cup has concluded, The Surf Station will join the names of Outerbanks winner’s WRV Virginia Beach, and California winner’s Huntington Surf and Sport for a chance to win the trip. The trip includes airfare, rental car, accommodations at the Turtle Bay Resort, dinner at the O’Neill Pipe House with team O’Neill, and VIP access to the O’Neill World Cup at Sunset. To see who wins, log on to oneill.com this Friday evening the 28th! Good luck to The Surf Station, WRV, and HSS!
