Saturday night marked the opening of the California Surf Museum’s latest and greatest exhibit called “WOW: Women On Waves”. The event was attended by the who’s who of women’s surfing and included Lisa Andersen, Maya Gabeira, Keala Kennelly, the real Gidget, Nancy Emerson, Courtney Conlogue, and Jen Smith among others. With a delicious spread and an open bar, party goers were treated to an amazing presentation of the history of women’s surfing, with photos and exhibits dating back to the pre-contact days in Hawaii to today.
About the exhibit:
The exhibit portrays a decade-by-decade depiction of highlights and achievements of many of the most significant female wave warriors in documented history. Come on by and celebrate along with the legends, from Eve Fletcher to Linda Benson, Linda Merrill to Jericho Poppler, Joyce Hoffman to Jen Smith.
Two dozen significant boards, several trophies, bathing suits, and contest memorabilia have been brought in to tell their story. Many of these women had to overcome using heavy, unwieldy boards and uncomfortable bathing attire in order to pursue the sport they loved so well.
