Aussie Joel Parkinson Talks About J-Bay, Winning, And The Wave He Loves
(Sunday, July 10, 2011) Australian surfer, Joel Parkinson, is regarded as one of the true greats at J-Bay. In 1999, aged just 18, “Parko” arrived in J-Bay for the first time and entered the Billabong Pro as a wildcard. He went on to win the event and mark his place in history.
Ten years later, Parko claimed his second tournament win at J-Bay, this time as a full-time touring professional and perennial world title threat.
In 2010, Parko was unable to defend his title, due to injury—a terrible slice to his heel that not only saw him miss the Billabong Pro, but more than half the 2010 ASP Men’s Tour. In 2011, Parko returns to J-Bay and the wave to which his surfing has become synonymous.
He is healthy, fit and focused and already has a season win under his belt at Bells Beach. He sits at number two in the world. Few attack the walls of Supertubes with such a sublime blend of power, timing and flow.
