Puerto Rico was the host of the first stop of the 2008 Rip My Shred Stick Summer Tour. For the second year running the venue was Aviones Beach. Like last year the turn out was great. The waves where fun two-three foot a-frame peaks that resembled Lower Trestles with a bit more bend that packed a punch. The kids were stoked as the more experienced young surfers were taking advantage of the outside peak and the mini groms were on the inside rollers with long rides all the way to the beach.
This contest is different as every single competitor is a winner, collecting their goodie bag as they check in. As the day went on, Hector Santamaria posted some high scores with his eye on the UM surfboard that was up for grabs. The criteria was like the year before: two chances to get the best scores as every single kid surfed twice. At the end of the second round the twelve best averages would make two six man semi finals.
Before the Semifinals there was a friendly expression session between the Hurley Pro’s Kalani Robb, Pat O’Connell, Asher Nolan, and Otto Flores.
In the semis the action started as the kids strategically picked their favorite board from the quiver donated by the Hurley pros and made a plan of attack.
Like every year a different twist to the Shred Stick gets added in, so we created the RMSS Ex-Alumni event called ‘The Room JR. Pro Presented by Hurley.’ These are the competitors that are two old to be in the RMSS but have made the final in the past. So The Room Surf Shop put up a $525 purse and the boys went for it. With a solid showing, Eric Torres dominated the final leaving Jose Tavares in a respectable second place.
Great surfing assembled the final of the 2008 RMSS in PR which included: Hector Santamaria, Roger Torres, Ricardo Delgado, Daniel Aguilera, Christian Rivera, Ricardo Luke.
The competition was tight, but in the end Hector Santamaría, now four-time winner of the Hurley Rip My Shred Stick Puerto Rico, posted two big scores to edge out Ricardo Delgado after a great performance during. Ricardo is also now the proud owner of a brand new UM stick.
This year the girls got their’s as well. The best female performer was Paulina Pasarell, as she took home a brand new UM Surfboard. Finishing second was Sheila Martinez who got a Nixon watch and some Dakine goodies.
Hurley had some great support from the co-sponsors: UM Surfboards, Da Kine The Room Surfshop, Surfline, Surfing Magazine, Nixon, Nike 6.0, and Red Bull.
After the event we had all the kids and their parents at the The Room Surf shop in Punta Las Maria’s for great food and drinks, as well as a video presented buy Moncho Dapena of the days action.
All in all it was a great day at the beach for everyone. And an amazing start to what looks to be a great Rip My Shred Stick Summer Tour for 2008. A huge Thanks to The Puerto Rico Surfing Federation, Jorge Gonzales, the judges, and everyone that helped out and participated.
