Free Family Event at Peninsula Park Field next to Balboa Pier features
Premiere of Young Guns II Surf Film, Autograph Signing, Games, Prizes, and More
Newport Beach, CA – July 11, 2005 — Quiksilver, the boardriding industry leader, is partnering with Balboa Performing Arts Theater to present Quicksilver’s Family Movie Night, featuring a free screening of Young Guns II starring Kelly Slater, at Peninsula Park Field next to the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach on Thursday, July 28, 2005, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.
Families, friends, residents, surfers and kids are invited to gather and enjoy Quiksilver’s latest surf film release (which will be shown on a large screen to be set up at one end of Peninsula Park Field), coupled with a new skate film, a Balboa Theater preview, free Quiksilver prize giveaways, and an opportunity drawing for a surfboard, snowboard and skateboard. Many of Quiksilver’s top athletes will be on site prior to the screening to meet fans and sign posters.
Refreshments will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Balboa Performing Arts Theater. Families are also encouraged to bring picnics, blankets and beach chairs. No alcoholic beverages permitted. The event opens for picnicking at 6:30. Autograph signing and games begin at 7 pm. The movies start at 8:00 pm. Additional information is available by calling the Balboa Theater at (949) 673-0895.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Quiksilver on this event, states Mary Lonich, executive director of the Balboa Performing Arts Theater Foundation. “Because our theater is located at the beach, what better place to present a movie than within a few feet of the surf and sand. This is also a perfect example of one of the many types of organizations with whom we plan to work with in the future.
“Quiksilver welcomes the opportunity to work with the Balboa Performing Arts Theater, says Quiksilver Founder and President Bob McKnight. “I remember going to the old Balboa movie theater and watching surf movies, so I’m really looking forward to the restoration. I know that Quiksilver and others in our industry will be eager to put the theater to use.”
Since 1928, the Balboa Theater has been a treasured historic landmark, one that served countless visitors until closing its doors in 1992. Now, the Balboa Performing Arts Theater Foundation is conducting a capital campaign to renovate the theater and transform it into a 320-seat multi-use venue for the presentation of music, dance, film, theater and arts education programs. The Foundation is charged with facility design, raising construction funds, and managing the Theater’s daily operations. The new Balboa Performing Arts Theater is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008.
