Friday, October 1, 2004 (Hossegor, France) The Quiksilver Pro in France was again postponed today, following a long day of constant evaluation. Remaining third round heats in the Foster’s men’s ASP World Championship Tournament (WCT) were on standby throughout the day, but ultimately the decision was made at ‘Le Penon’ this afternoon to wait for more favorable conditions.
Clean 1ft (0.3m) waves greeted competitors this morning, but the expected swell increase did start to show itself on cue around midday. While 3ft (1m) surf continued for most the afternoon, slight onshore winds strengthened, and with time left within the generous event waiting period, organizers met with surfers and agreed to allow the US$260,000 tournament to climax over the coming days.
World #7 surfer representative Kieren Perrow (AUS) was on hand for the decisions today, and faces fellow countryman Dean Morrison (Gold Coast) in the round’s sixth heat. He explained; “France is difficult cause you’re always waiting for the tide to change, and the sandbanks always change with different swell directions. There are always varying opinions on what to do too, but I think we did the best we could. We came and waited, and the waves aren’t very good. Everyone knows we’ll have to run tomorrow, and I think the swell is going to be bigger and a lot better.
When competition continues, 2000 world champion Sunny Garcia (HAW) faces Tom Whitaker (AUS) in the morning’s first heat.
Defending Quiksilver Pro and reigning two-time world champion Andy Irons (HAW) is against Trials winner Jonathan Gonzales (CNY) in heat #8, while six-time world champ Kelly Slater (FL, USA) meets Brazilian Armando Daltro the following match.
All other upcoming heats are listed below.
The Quiksilver Pro France will have 5 languages for its live Internet webcast including English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Japanese: www.quiksilver.com/profrance.
