Big Youth Happening Episode 1
Volcom Entertainment

I like the way those Volcom guys do things. They just film having fun and screwing around. They have huge parties that are out of hand¿they video those, too. They also have a record label that has ass-whipping bands who perform in this video like Four Stroke Donkey, Camp Kill Yourself, and The Line. There’s rad footy of the team in Fiji¿Wooly gets the best barrel. Then it cuts to a guy doing a 540 on the Volcom mini-ramp. Overall, there’s all kinds of warped shit going on with good music the whole way through. Get this first episode, wait patiently for the next one, and then get that one, too. ¿C.C.

C-Clamp
Longer Waves
Ohio Gold Records

C-Clamp plays soulful, deep, technical, independent rock ‘n’ roll with a touch of blues. The singer has a low voice that sounds super good alongside the swirling guitars and tight articulate drumming. Music like C-Clamp’s is best to listen to while driving with that blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty you’ve loved for years, or that little chill session after you get home from that house party where you danced with that blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl you’ve loved for years. If you can’t find C-Clamp, go to an independent record store and order it. Find yourself in indie rock.¿C.C.

Big Pun
Yeeeah Baby
Loud Records

This newest release from Pun is filled with supreme quality tracks which determine Pun’s place among hip-hop’s hall of fame. His masterful emceeing proves it. Yeeeah Baby is the follow-up to his 1998 album, Capital Punishment, and the fort has definitely been held down superbly by the big man. Unfortunately, Big Pun passed away in February 2000 due to a heart attack. His legacy will carry on forever in his music. Hip-hop has lost another shining star. R.I.P Christopher Rios. Big Pun forever.¿A.S.

Music From And Inspired by The Motion Picture
Black And White
Loud Records

Damn, this is a juicy soundtrack from the movie Black And White, which will be on the big screen by the time you read this. It’s a movie about a group of rich white New York City teens and their reckless fascination with hip-hop culture. There’s some big names starring in this flick as well¿Ben Stiller, Brooke Shields, Elijah Woods, Method Man, Claudia Schiffer, Robert Downey Jr., and Mike Tyson. The soundtrack consists of thirteen fresh-as-shit tracks from Raekwon, RZA, Mos Def, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Dead Prez, and Xzibit.Judging from the music, the movie should be dope, too.¿A.S.

Caustic Resin
Trick Question
Alias Records

From the land that brought us Built To Spill, The Halo Benders, and the Treepeople¿Boise, Idaho’s Caustic Resin are quickly becoming another indie rock favorite (incidentally, most of the aforementioned bands often play and record music together).Trick Question is the follow-up album to Caustic’s 1998 release, The Medicine Is All Gone. A good way to describe their music would be comparable to the way you feel before you fall asleep¿a trippy sense of calmness followed by a dream-like state. This is one of those after-session albums guarenteed to put you in the right frame of mind. Long live Boise, Idaho!¿A.S.

Changes
On Fire Productions

When a surfer watches a surf movie, usually they’re going to judge what they see based on the level of surfing, music, and the quality of it. Everything’s fine in this video, but the music won’t hold the attention of most viewers. It doesn’t have the arrogant, aggressive sound usually motivating those watching to go and tear up the ocean. This isn’t really a movie about surfing; it’s a document of people who practice a certain religious way of life who just so happen to surf. This somewhat surfing movie will not appeal to the younger audiences of surfers preferring a fast-paced, high-volume display of radical surfing without any kind of incorporation of material other than humor and muc. On the other hand, it will appeal to those who are active Christians holding seriously to the thought that the lineup in their heaven will not be a crowded one.¿Lou Ziffer

Dead Prez
Let’s Get Free
Loud Records

This is a powerful release from Dead Prez, hip-hop’s newest political activists. Wanna know how hard life is on the streets? Take some time and listen to Let’s Get Free, and you’ll find out firsthand. Featuring revolutionaries, stic.man and M-1, this album has some dope beats, and there’s some heavily laden equal-rights activism goin’ on in there as well. The track “Police State” is featured on the soundtrack of the HBO prison documentary, Thugged Out: Locked Down In America, so you know these cats is hard.¿A.S.

Dilated Peoples
The Platform
Capital Records

I love hearing good new shit. This new release from the Dilated Peoples has restored my faith in West Coast hip-hop, most definitely.Evidence, Iris Science, and on the vinyl cuts, Babu, bring you their best yet on The Platform. Track after track of complex ryhmes and hooks flood through this entire album. Expect to hear Tha Alkaholiks, B-Real of Cypress Hill, Defari, Aceyalone, and Phil Da Agony. You’d be pretty smart to pick this one up.¿A.S.

Electric Wizard
Supercoven
MIA/Southern Lord Recordings

Something dawned on me the other day. It seems as if there’s a new kind of rock movement going on¿there’re a handful of bands out there who sound like Black Sabbath! I grew up listening to Sabbath and I’m completely burnt out on all of their albums (yes, even Technical Ecstasy). That doesn’t matter anymore, because Electric Wizard has picked up where the original sludge-driven riff-rock mania fell off twenty-five years ago. Supercoven is heavy as f¿k, and I’m sure Ozzy, Tony, Bill, and Geezer would be proud of these fellow Brit rockers. You should also check out Electric Wizard’s double-album, Come My Fanatics, for some supreme heaviness. Put this album on as loud as humanly possible, turn out the lights, and astral project yourself into the sun.¿A.S.

Heads or Tails
On A Mission/Poor Specimen I really, really, really, really, like this video. The music is insane¿a perfect mix of rock, rap, and some groovy trance-style jams. The surfing is also insane with all the favorites from the On A Mission team like Rob Machado, Dorian, Ross, Tim Curran, Jay Larson and the rest of the crew. Benji Weatherley and Jay blow this video up! The footage of Reunion Island is amazing¿Rob knows how to surf there very well. So basically, here’s another video you have to go buy. Or you can just get sponsored by a company, trade their lame shit in to a resale shop, and get a copy for free.¿C.C.

High On Fire
The Art Of Self Defense
Man’s Ruin Records

Man, oh man. This album is a longtime comin’! What a milestone, to rise from the ashes of Sleep. The original guitarist, Matt Pike, wanted to keep the dream alive enough to restart his own musical prophetic project, all in the name of the heaviness of sludge-core. This time around, though, High On Fire is more upbeat, with chaotic rock riff-filled soundscapes for your brain to soak in and reflect on. This release is simply amazing. A must-buy for fans of Sleep, Sabbath, and all that is holy!¿A.S.

Hot Snakes
Automatic Midnight
Sympathy For The Record Industry/Swami Records

It’s as simple as this: The Hot Snakes rock, and if you like your rock rocking¿get this disc. Featuring members of such esteemed bands like Delta 72, the amazing Rocket From The Crypt, and the rulers of rock, Drive Like Jehu. Singer Rick Farr is the best. The drumming is flawless, and the guitar and bass will tear your face off. You’ll hear this band in the TransWorld SURF video coming soon. But regardless of that, go buy this now, or look it up on the Internet like a little dork.¿C.C.

Joan Of Arc
A portable model of how memory works
Jade Tree

Do you own music that only plays on the cool radio stations? Wow, that’s really sad. Most of the music that’s different and actually pushes the limit of what music can be is usually found in the indie section of your local independent music store. Take for instance this release by Joan of Arc. It has the most amazing songs that are constantly changing and flowing with emotion. Their music is like nothing you’ve ever heard before. If you like Korn or Powerman 5000, you’ll dis Joan of Arc. If you like Stereolab, Pavement, or Tortoise¿you’ll love Joan of Arc. I’d say it’s music for sensitive people who love music that challenges them. Track number four is one of the best songs ever made. Want to find out for yourself? Check out jadetree.com.¿C.C.

Liquid Nation
Constant C Productions

This is another one of those surf flicks that reaffirms how shitty the surf is around your hometown. There’s flawless point breaks in far-off islands. Tavarua? Fiji? The Philippines? They all look the same after watching through your glassy, tear-soaked eyes. There’s lots of footage of Pipeline and the usual quick clips of half- naked women. The first scenes in the movies of big scary Pipeline is put to an upbeat Sublime-like tune, which is like putting Leonard Cohen to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There’s great stuff of what’s his name? Um, uh, oh, Karin Saeter. Yeah, he rips it up real hard. He almost blows his cover that he’s human with the shots of him where you can almost see his anti-gravity device and his suction feet. There’s also a priceless segment of Dan Malloy fighting for justice, confronting what looks like to be five local guys who repeatedly cut him off while surfing. It’s quite a brawl, and it’s real funny. It’s worth renting or buying this just for that one five-minute fight scene.¿J.M.

Lock Up
Pleasures Pave Sewers
Nuclear Blast America

Listen to Lock Up before you surf, skate, snowboard, or if you just want to destroy something. With two current members of Napalm Death, a member from the black-metal band Dimmu Borgir, and the vocalist from Hypocrisy, this album is a masterpiece of bloody, raw grind! This album is comparable to Terrorizer’s (another project band with Napalm’s guitarist, Jesse Pintado) World Downfall album that was released in 1990. Amazingly, they’ve never played together before recording this beautiful display of aggression. Don’t be afraid to go out and buy this album¿it won’t bite you.¿A.S.

Grand Theft Auto 2
Rockstar Games

This is a game geared toward teens. It teaches teenagers the finer things in life, such as drug dealing, planting bombs, and car-jacking. The goal of GTA 2 is to get in good with certain gangs around this little city. It’s basically an overhead view of yourself as you go around beating people up and shooting them. The game cusses and yells at you if you screw up. It’s fun to play with a big group, even though it’s a one-player game. Totally original and totally warped, GTA 2 is a must for any PlayStation aficionado.¿C.C.

Half Pint
Recollection
Cornerstone Ras/Skunk

If you were to pinpoint the reggae capital of the United States, it’d have to be Long Beach, California. The reason¿Sublime. Another reason is the Long Beach Dub All Stars who’ve pulled together with some bros to create a record label called Cornerstone Ras. Cornerstone’s newest release is from a man known as Half Pint. This disc titled, Recollection, is classic reggae with deep grooves and soulful singing. Half Pint is a new messiah who can send praise to Jah with his beautiful voice. All tracks stand out, so go to your local independent record store and buy it. Then go home, sit in a circle, and praise Jah.¿C.C.

Guidance Recording Presents:The Voices Of Urban Renewal
Guidance Recordings

This newest release from Guidance Recordings is all about the infusion of spoken word poetry with jazz, funk, hip-hop, drum and bass, and house music. It’s the perfect backdrop for the future of poetry as we know it. Artists include the mighty Mos Def, the human beatbox Rahzel, Philadelphia poet Ursula Rucker, The Mad Professor, Chuck D., and a host of other underground poets. If you’re looking for something different to get you in the groove, this is it.¿A.S.

Trembling Blue Stars
Broken By Whispers
Sub Pop

Sub Pop records sends me the best discs all the time. It’s always a pleasure to open up the packages they send. They recently sent a band I’ve never heard of called the Trembling Blue Stars. They play soft romantic music that reeks of Brit pop, which is a good thing. If you’re looking to add a soft, slow, yet intriguing disc to your collection, consider the Trembling Blue Stars. Then open your windows, let the cool breeze in, and start making out.¿C.C.

Walls Of Jericho
The Bound Feed The Gagged
Trustkill Records

There are all types of music out there. Some make you want to love, some make you want to dance, and some make you want to drive 80 miles per hour headfirst into a cement wall. Well, this is that kind of music. It’s not make-out music, unless you’re getting raped by a large land or sea creature. The different twist to this blaring speed metal is that the singer is a girl. Yes, a woman who can really sing her ass off! I mean, what can I say about this kind of sound? If you like fast and hard type of rockin’ sound, you’ll probably appreciate it. It’s nice to hear a girl get this pissed. Go and buy it. It’ll come in handy when you accidentally light your genitals on fire.¿Josh McClure

Teddy Bear Picnic
Maurice Cole Productions

I used to laugh when people would comment on how the Aussies were “weird.” I wouldn’t confirm that notion¿I’m trying to stray away from all stereotypes and assumptions. After reviewing Teddy Bear Picnic, I’d have to say I’m now beginning to think the Aussies are really strange. This fine piece of work takes place inside a submarine, the highlight being a teddy bear popping up everytime something good happens. In the opening scene, Australian surfers are towed into medium-to-large surf, which is kinda like watching an extremely obese woman trying to eat a roast beef sandwich while rolling down a very steep hill in an innertube. There’re some rockin’ tunes and killer moves, so sit back, and instead of your usual lotion¿grab some Vegemite and break loose.¿J.M.

Snoop Dogg’s Smokefest 2
Priority/No Limit Records

Do you know Snoop Dogg? Are you friends with him? Does he call you on weekends? Well if he doesn’t, you can still feel like you know him with his new video highlighting Snoop’s ’98 and ’99 tour. Most of the video is Snoop and his Dogg Pound smoking hand-rolled cigarettes of something they kept calling “the chronic.” There’s some really funny comedy performed by Snoop’s rival, “Big Jeffrey.” All the hits are here and some backstage action that’s funny as hell. Snoop seems like a pretty cool guy, and judging by the way he and his crew are glued to PlayStation controllers¿he’s pretty much just like the rest of us, only he’s Snoop, and we’re not. Want to see what backstage is like at a Snoop concert, buy the video, B-E-E-A-A-T-C-H!¿C.C.

Voluptuous Two Double D
Snapping Turtle Productions

The guys at Snapping Turtle make movies for people who like airs, rock ‘n’ roll, female breasts, huge barrels, and lots of partying. In Voluptuous Two Double D, all the boys represent themselves well. The San Clemente crew tears your ass up, as usual. Standouts include
