BoilermakerLeucadiaBetter Looking RecordsAfter a long break the North San Diego County indie-rock kings are back, and they came to toy with your emotions. Boilermaker was one of the premier emo-indie bands rocking San Diego with the likes of Three Mile Pilot, Drive Like Jehu, Tanner, and Heavy Vegetable. All of those bands have since rearranged and moved on, and as for Boilermaker, we thought the band was gone forever. It was a dark time for the San Diego scene. Now, many years later, San Diego’s favorite sons have returned to save us from the rap-metal-infested airwaves that are threatening to destroy everything indie. Boilermaker’s new album, titled Leucadia (after the band’s hometown north of San Diego), is all its previously released songs with two new songs and the promise of an all new full-length in the near future. If you like Three Mile Pilot, My Bloody Valentine, Drive Like Jehu, or any other powerful indie rock, go purchase the new Boilermaker and rock hard, indie soldiers!¿C.C.

The BlockheadsBraindeadBlockhead RecordsA little bit of old-school punk never killed anyone. The guys in The Blockheads, a punk band from Southern California, aren’t afraid to rock leather jackets and Chuck Taylors. The group’s freshman release, Braindead, is a punk-rock gem that will keep you pogoing ’til dawn. If you’re a Ramones fan, you’ll appreciate The Blockheads. Let’s go rock ‘n’ roll!¿C.C.

Love As LaughterSea to Shining SeaSub PopThe first song on this disc is awesome. If you haven’t heard of Love As Laughter, you’re missing out on a legendary and influential rock band that has touched the hearts of such amazing bands as Built To Spill, Modest Mouse, and Nirvana. LAL plays music that’s poppy, rocky, indie, and happy. If you like Modest Mouse or 764-Hero, then you’ll be an LAL fan, guaranteed. Listen to the live Built To Spill album to hear its take on the Love As Laughter song “Singing Sores Make Perfect Swords.” It’s great.¿C.C.

Now It’s OverheardNow It’s OverheardSaddle Creek RecordsGood mellow-but-pleasing indie rock is a hard thing to come by these days, but if you look hard enough, you may find a gem like Now It’s Overheard. They have a unique sound reminiscent of The Flaming Lips or a keyboard-influenced Death Cab For Cutie. Their music may take you by surprise because of its depth and range¿there’s lots of good twists and turns to keep you listening. These guys could be Brits, but I don’t think they are. Turn off the radio, and turn on Now It’s Overheard. Be happy and fulfilled.¿C.C.

Yesterday’s New QuintetAngles Without EdgesStones Throw RecordsStraight chillin’-the-f¿k-out music, that’s what Yesterday’s New Quintet is. From the West Coast’s one and only loop digga, Lootpack’s Madlib, comes the most refreshing jazz fused with live hip-hop beats I’ve heard in a long-ass time. If you’re into Quasimoto (another dope Madlib production), then you’ve got an idea what YNQ sounds like¿except there’re no lyrics on this piece. This is the perfect CD to put in your player on a cloudy Sunday morning when you just piddle around your house and do nothing.¿A.S.

Scratch: Volume OneRawkus RecordsScratch is a club in London, England that over the years has hosted some of the most amazing acts in the world of hip-hop¿super groups like Main Source, A Tribe Called Quest, Digital Underground, Souls Of Mischief, Freestyle Fellowship, KMD, and Original Flavor, to name a few. This CD is a sonic record of the bands that have graced the club’s stage over the course of a decade. This is a dope diggin’-in-the-crates-style comp, so do yourself a favor and go get you a li’l bit.¿A.S.

DirtyThe Pimp And Da GangstaUniversal RecordsEver since my girlfriend and I got digital cable, my music-listening choices have changed. Before it, I didn’t care about “Dirty South” type hip-hop, but now I can’t get enough of the shit. Whoever programs the music on the rap-listening channeplays all kinds of new stuff¿that’s where I found Dirty. My favorite song, “Hit Da Floe,” has one of those hooks where one of the dudes in the group busts out in a high-pitched voice with, “Yeah, we ill, boyyyy!”Whatever¿go get this CD, put it on song twelve, then song two, and you’ll know what I’m sayin’. The whole CD sounds mellow and makes you want to jump in your Caddy, drop your seat back, and bump it all over town.¿A.C.

Project PatMista Don’t PlayLoud RecordsAre you ready? Okay, repeat after me¿”Wok, wok, chicken, chicken … wok, wok, chickenheads!” Now go get this CD and cherish this anthem every time girls mess with you. You gotta love Project Pat, his North Memphis slang leaves you wondering what the hell he just said. His Deep South sound was produced by Juicy J and DJ Paul of the Three 6 Mafia¿if you like their sound you’ll definitely love this. The two best songs are “Chickenhead” with La Chat and Three 6 Mafia, and “Don’t Save Her” with Crunchy Black. You can tell a lot by song titles when they’re listed as “Cheese and Dope,” “Gorilla Pimp,” and “Ski Mask”¿the lyrics involve all the real stuff he’s seen in his town.¿A.C.

Sings For Cassavettes DVDAn All Ages Film By Justin MitchellAll ages shows used to save my life when I was in high school. It always seemed like all the bands that any of us high school dorks wanted to see were usually playing at a bar, or at some seedy 21-and-over rock club. Standing out in front of the building trying to hear a band is embarassing and apathetic, but any twenty or younger indie-rock lover can attest to doing it once or twice in their lives. Anyway, this new DVD/film is all about great bands that play all ages shows for their fans. This film features interviews and live footage of Unwound, The Make Up, Sleater-Kinney, The Hi-Fives, and many more indie rulers. Go ge this DVD and learn the ropes of the indie-rock-revolution.¿C.C.

Oasis Familiar To Millions DVDEpic Records/Big BrotherOur favorite British f¿kups are back with a complete and all-inclusive DVD of their Summer 2000 tour. CKY3A Bam Margera FilmBy now you should know that Bam and his friends are f¿king crazy. This is like Jackass on acid and Ex-Lax. A lot of shrub-diving and shopping-cart shit, as well as a lot of actual shit. Raab, you’re messed up. We love you West Chester f¿kers. Go get the new CKY3 now! Keep watching past the credits for the CKY and H.I.M. rock videos.¿C.C.

Lost Across America Vol. 2: The DeclineLost ProductionsHere’s another Lost video that’s fully packed with over an hour of shredding, partying, stupidity, and session after session of mad airs and slashes. The surfing in this video ranges from one-foot slop to huge smashers. The pros who blast in this video include Cory Lopez, Aaron Cormican, Justin Matteson, Dean Randazzo, Adam Virs, David Weare, and a long list of high-flying surf bros. Look for John Robertson’s section and the Cory and Shea section in Florida. Plus Sean Hayes in hell surf (Hi Sean, I miss you.).As far as the usual Lost antics go, there’s one scene where someone (I think it’s Chris Won) is sliding down this sewage chute at like 100 miles per hour. F¿king nuts! Other than that, it’s the Lost bros drinking, smoking, and terrorizing Randall, pretty much all stuff we saw and loved in What’s Really Going On!? The question must be asked of Lost, “What’s next?”¿C.C.

Fast Youth ATM/Ryan WileyHere’s another one of those skate videos you should watch. It’s the real shit, raw and rocking. A great soundtrack with some fine sections from Ronnie Bertino, Jake Brown, Jeremy Deglopper, and an extra-ripping section from Edward Devera. Right on, Wiley.¿C.C.

THUMB BLISTERS

Dragon Warrior ThreeEnix/Game Boy ColorThis game’s for kids thirteen and under. I say this because I couldn’t even play it long enough to think of something good to write for this review. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics are okay, and there’re a lot of colorful characters, but it was too basic to keep my attention for very long.¿D.L.

Activision Classic GamesActivision/PlayStationActivision Classic Games is one of the best games I’ve reviewed in a long time. It’s got the games I grew up playing, so it must be intended for those of us who actually know what an Atari 2600 is. This game has 30 of the best Activision games ever made, like Pitfall, River Raid, Chopper Command, and Kaboom¿which is my personal all-time favorite. This game is a definite must-have!¿D.L.

BowlingA1 Games/PlayStationLast week, while shopping at the mall, I went into a computer store and found this game for only $9.99, so I decided to buy it. After playing it for a few minutes, I realized why it was so cheap¿there’s really no point to the game. It’s just a bowling game without special levels or characters¿all you get is a lane, ten pins, and one ball.¿D.L.

QbertAtari/PlayStationDamn, this game’s still harder than most of the games out today! I don’t know how people beat this shit back in the day¿I spent a while playing just to make it to level two! With Qbert, you’re not just stuck playing the classic version¿you also get to play a new 3-D adventure-game version, which is better than the original version of the game. The cost is cheap enough to pick this game up, so maybe check it out and decide for yourself if you like it.¿D.L.
