CONDITIONS: FUN 2-3 FOOT LINED UP RIGHTS AND LEFTS
The second and third stop of the NSSA Gold Coast Conference ran onOctober 4th and 5th at Port Hueneme Pier. More than 300 competitorsbattled it out for valuable ratings points in fun 2-3 foot steep linedup rights and lefts. Along with the Gold Coast double header the firstairshow of the season launched with 24 of the top rated Gold Coastaerialists pushing the boundaries of progressive surfing.
GOLD COAST EVENTS #2 AND #3 HIGHLIGHTS:MENS DIVISION: Pierce Flynn has never made a NSSA semi final but heturned up his skills to the highest level in event #1 not only makinghis first ever final but winning it on a unanimous judges decision.Nick Rosza was runner-up to Flynn in event #2 but took it all the way inevent #3 clinching his first win in the Mens division.
JUNIORS DIVISION: Nick definitely outdid the field in event #3 claimingboth the Mens and Juniors finals. He also won the Juniors division inevent #2 which makes him undefeated so far this season. Nick’s got a1,300 point lead in the Juniors and is trailing Mens leader Paul Franzenby a mere 20 points.
BOYS DIVISION: So far, Cory Arrambide has dominated the Gold Coast Boysdivision with a pair of victories in #2 and #3 and a win at the seasonopener. Cory, the reigning National Middle School Boys Champion, isalso ranked third overall in the Gold Coast Juniors division.
MENEHUENE DIVISION: Last season in his first NSSA year, KokoroTomatsuri only made three finals. Wow, this season it’s a differentstory as Kokoro has won all three Gold Coast Menehuene finals. Andwhat’s most impressive is Kokoro just came off a huge victory in theBoys division at the Southwest Open season held at Ventura “C” Streetlast weekend.
WOMENS DIVISION: Cloe Talavera picked off the best waves and destroyedthe Womens final in event #2 with event #1 winner Sage Erickson placingsecond. Sage came back for Sunday’s event and claimed her secondvictory of the season.
MASTERS DIVISION: After an almost year long victory drought and ashocker round one loss in the Gold Coast season opener, Chad LaBass tookcontrol of the Masters division winning both finals. The victory movesChad into second but he’s still trailing 2002 Gold Coast champ andcurrent ratings leader Arro Young by nearly 500 points.
SENIORS DIVISION: Dave Townley claimed his first Gold Coast victory ofthe season in the Seniors division in event #1 but it was a “SLAMZ”knockout on Sunday as multi NSSA conference and National Champion MikeLamm was back in the winners circle in event #3.
LONGBOARD: Michael Maddlelein from the chilly waters of Cayucos, ledthe charge in Saturday’s Longboard final and scored his first ever NSSAvictory. Event #1 winner Larry Ugale came back on Sunday and claimedhis second victory winning the final with Maddlelein coming in second.
O’NEILL NSSA DIVISION AIRSHOW-ACE FLIGHT PERFORMANCE AWARDED TO RYANPETERSONTwenty-four Gold Coast aerialists were invited to perform in the firstevent of the NSSA Gold Coast airshows presented by O’Neill. Venturaaerial standout Ryan Peterson put on an incredible flight show in frontof a cheering crowd. He easily clinched first place by a margin of 12points, effortlessly performing a huge backside air and landing itperfectly. His aerial score came in at a 24.5 out of a possible 30 fromthe judges. Earlier in the heat, Ryan also launched a big frontside airposting a 22.0 total, the second highest total of the entire airshowevent.
COMING UP-The 2003/04 Gold Coast season will continue with event #4 atVentura’s famous “C” Street surf break. From there the Gold Coast willjourney north to Santa Cruz for event #5 five star/double points ratedat Pleasure Point and the “Lane” on November 1-2.
