Results From NSSA Gold Coast Explorer Events 5 and 6

NSSA GOLD COAST EXPLORER EVENTS # 5 and #6
PISMO BEACH PIER
NOVEMBER 3-4, 2001

It was a big weekend for 17-year-old Bud Frietas of Santa Cruz. Budunleashed his talent and took both victories in events #5 and #6 of atwo day Gold Coast marathon. Conditions on the south side of Pismo Pierwere decent for both event #5 on Saturday and event #6 on Sunday withconsistent semi walled 3-5′ surf. Bud dominated the competition winningevery heat in Saturdays event before pulling off the victory in the last24 seconds in the Juniors final. He came back for event #6 on Sundayand won every heat except one to nail another victory while pulling intofirst in the ratings. Bud is now the owner of a substantial 1,300-pointlead over Dane Reynolds.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:In the Mens division, Blake Howard took his first victory of the seasonin event #5. However, the following day, Tarik Khashoggi spanked thecompetition in the Mens final winning it by a 10-point margin. Blake’sbig win in the five star event on Saturday coupled with a third placeshowing in event #6 moved him to the ratings top spot. Kai Ellison wason fire in Saturday’s event and opened up the day in Juniors round onewith a near perfect 9.25 wave score, the highest score of the day. Thatafternoon, Kai went on to take his first victory of the season in theBoys final. A no show in both events in the Boys division from leaderKilian Garland opened up the ratings race. Kellen Ellison took over thelead with fourth place finishes in both events with brother Kai trailingin second by a mere two points!

THE STREAK IS STILL ALIVE! -Twelve-year-old Cory Arrambide kept his bidalive for a perfect season taking both victories in the Menehuenedivision. After enjoying a great day of competition on Saturday wherehe won the Menehuene final and took an impressive runner up placing inthe Boys final, Cory fell ill on Sunday but still managed to clinch hissixth straight victory. That puts his victory total to nine on theseason counting his three consecutive Open Boys wins.

The Masters race is heating up as first and second ranked Arro Young andRobert Weiner each scored victories this weekend. The win was morecrucial for Arro as he scored the win in the five star double pointsrated contest on Saturday, which gave him 2,000 points. The win forRobert in event #6 will serve as a confidence booster after goingwinless since his victory at the Mandalay season opener. Arro maintainsthe lead by nearly 400 points. In Womens competition, Jessica Oswaldtook the victory in event #5 and Beth Engel scored her third win of theseason in event #6 which puts her at a 1,000 point advantage in theratings.

OSMAS LAUNCH: The second event of the OSMAS NSSA Gold Coast schedulewas held on Saturday. Sixteen-year-old Christian Bummy Kopenick ofCarpenteria launched a clean standard air to take a 41-36 point win overBlake Howard. Bummy, with a beaming smile ear-to-ear, clutching theOSMAS winners cup said that was one of the best airs he’s evercompleted!OSMAS GOLD COAST RESULTS

GOLD COAST PRIDE! Gold Coast and Southwest standout Nathaniel Curranwas noticeably absent from the Pismo contests but for good reason.Nathaniel was competing in the PSTA 2001 Championships held at C Streetin Ventura. The NSSA is proud to report that Nathaniel took a mightyimpressive second place in the final for his best ever result in aprofessional event. The week prior, Nathaniel destroyed both the Mensand Juniors finals at Gold Coast event #4 held at the same location at CStreet. The new NSSA season has already proven to be Nathaniel’s finestever. Early in the season, he has already won eight events includingthree Gold Coast Mens, three Gold Coast Juniors and two OSMAS events.WAY TO GO NATHANIEL!
