NSSA OPEN SEASON EVENT #6
3 STAR RATED
JANUARY 3-4, 2004
The Southwest Conference opened up the New Year with the Open Season on the south side of Oceanside Pier-the sixth stop on the ten event tour. A semi weak weather system passing through Southern California produced stormy 2-4 foot surf for Saturday’s preliminary rounds cleaning up on Sunday with beautiful conditions, but decreasing surf in the 1-3 foot range.
QUICK FACTS: 20 year old Brandon Guilmette of Huntington Beach had his greatest run ever in NSSA making his first ever Open final and claiming the victory in the Men’s division over defending National Champ and ratings front-runner Pat Gudauskas. Pat’s runner-up finish solidified his lead in the ratings with a near 2,000 point advantage with four events remaining. Pat’s younger brother 15 year old Tanner posted the only perfect “10” of the contest in the Juniors final. He backed his superior wave up with a 6.5 score to clinch a convincing victory for his third of the season. In an almost carbon copy lead as his older brother, Tanner now leads the Juniors pack by almost 2,000 points. In the Boys division, 11 year old Cole Moody was all smiles after taking his first ever NSSA win while defeating super grom Andrew Doheny. In the Mini Grom division, 9 year old Kolohe “Brother” Andino kept his perfect streak alive winning every heat including the final. Since Open event #1, Kolohe has earned 23 straight heat victories without a loss. Lauren Sweeney took here third win of the season in the Women’s, which puts her in a solid 1,300 point lead in the ratings. “Don’t mess with Texas” in the longboard division! Port Aransas local Morgan Faulkner is putting miles on traveling to every Open event and it’s paid off. He claimed his second victory of the season in the Longboard division and advance to a 400 point lead in the ratings. Could he be the very first Texan to claim a Southwest title?
COMING UP: The Open Season will continue with event #7 on January 17-18 in Surf City, USA on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier.
