NSSA SOUTHWEST EXPLORER EVENT #5

SEASIDE REEF, CARDIFF BY THE SEA

JANUARY 10-11, 2004

CONDITIONS:  GOOD 3-5 FOOT LEFTS OFF THE REEF

FAST FACTS:  Three first time winners was the front-page news at the event.  18-year-old Anthony Duarte of Huntington Beach took the Men’s, 17-year-old Chad Montgomery of San Clemente won the Juniors and 14-year-old Bryan Doheny of Newport Beach claimed the Boys victory.  The five star rated event was worth valuable double points for placings so each winner collected a whopping 2,000 points.  Dane Gudauskas’ second place showing in the Men’s final will give him a huge boost in the ratings, especially since brother Patrick was benched with the flu.  Juniors ratings leader Alex Gray was ousted in the quarters, but #2 rating Tanner Gudauskas was a no-show in the quarters due to illness and #3 rated Ricky Whitlock took sixth in the final which was not enough to take the lead.  The Menehuene race is back on as Dane Zaun’s victory put him right next door to leader Andrew Doheny who placed sixth in the final.  Evan Slater made his first NSSA contest appearance since clinching the Masters crown at the 2003 Nationals.  Evan showed he hasn’t lost his touch winning the Masters final convincingly over defending National Seniors Champ Rusty Phillipy.  Rusty came back to take the Seniors final.  Scott Waring claimed his second victory of the season and his lead in the ratings will soar with the absence of #2 rated Scott Daley who was attending Surf Expo in Florida.  In Women’s competition, Alison Arvizu nailed her fourth victory of the season maintaining a huge ratings lead.  She’s still looking for her first Open victory so let’s see if she can do it in her home turf at this weekend’s Huntington Beach Open.  Mike Gillard is now two for two in the double rated events winning the Explorer opener in Huntington and now this one.  The victory will move Mike into first in the ratings.  Jake Minnehan won his second straight in the Bodyboard division.

COMING UP:  The Southwest Conference Open Season will continue with event #7 on January 17-18 in Surf City, USA on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier.  The fourth and final event of the 2003/04 Southwest College Season will be held on Monday, January 19th on Southside.  UCSD has taken two in a row after CSULB won the season opener.  The Explorer will continue with event #6 at San Fernando Street in Mission Beach on February 14-15. O-SMAS COMING TO SURF CITY:  O-SMAS will kick into high gear at the Open at H.B. Pier for the third event of the airshow series.
