Results From The 2003 NSSA Eastern Championships

The NSSA Eastern Championships has been a fixture at Sebastian Inlet forthe past ten years. Eleven years ago the NSSA established it’s firstEastern Championship at New Smyrna but made the move the following yearto legendary Sebastian Inlet where it has found it’s perfect home. Thisyear’s championship brought a record number of competitors, over 400,while expanding the contest to four days. The waves cooperatedthroughout the entire event with small but contestable 1-3 foot.Surfers and College Teams from the NSSA’s four east coast conferences,Southeast, Southeast/North, Northeast and Florida Gulf, were invited tothe Eastern Championships with the hopes of qualifying for a covetedslot in the upcoming NSSA Nationals June 20-28.

For six consecutive years, 17-year-old Brian Toth has been making themonthly flight from his home in Puerto Rico to Florida to compete in theNSSA Southeast Conference with the goal of becoming a more skilledcompetitor and the aspirations of becoming a National champion. At thisyear’s NSSA Easterns, it became clear that Brian is one step closer tohis National title dreams. On the afternoon of April 6, the final dayof the 2003 NSSA Eastern Championships, Brian cut right to the chase andcleaned house collecting a record shattering three titles-a first inNSSA regional championship history. For a kid that comes from thepowerful surf of his homeland, it’s quite a contrast to the 1-3 footsurf that was on offer at Florida’s famous Sebastian Inlet during theentire four-day championship. The big kid from Aquadilla even claimed aperfect 10.0 score in the Explorer Juniors final. An all star cast setup a much anticipated showdown for the Open Men’s final featuring Tothwith 2002 National Open Juniors Champion Jeremy Johnston, 2003 SoutheastConference Open Men’s Champion David Awbrey, 2003 Northeast ConferenceOpen Men’s Champion Raven Lundy, Alek Parker and Bradley Margol. Fromthe get-go, it was Brian’s final all the way. His dynamic backhandskills, which he has honed in the right-handers of his local break JobosBeach, proved to tough for his rivals. Brian sat on the famous rightwedge of first peak and opened up with a good 7.5 score, but as it turnsout he didn’t need it. He followed it up with a blistering 9.0 ride andanother 8.0 for a 17.0 total. Brian bettered that total in the ExplorerJuniors final, still sticking to the rights while utilizing his powerfulbackside manuevers. He picked off a good right cracked a multitude ofvertical turns and earned a perfect 10. He added another good 7.5 ridefor a 17.5 heat tally-the highest of the entire championships.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Caleb Johnston may be a local at the “other inlet”New Smyrna, but he took on Sebastian like it was his own backyard in theJuniors final. Caleb picked a peak up the beach away from the pack andhis strategy paid off. The 14-year-old three time Eastern Championcontrolled the final from the onset catching a 6.0 ride and then backingit up with a 7.0, which were the two highest heat scores. TravisBeckman, who last year made the 6,000 mile move from Hawaii to Montauk,NY came in second to Caleb in the Open but came back to dominate theExplorer Boys final taking his first NSSA championship crown. In theOpen Boys final, Eric Templeton claimed his first NSSA championshiptitle beating last year’s champ Kris Wiernicki who came in 4th.Although Sebastian was a bit on the small side for the big kids, it wasa playground for the Mini Groms and they were tearing it up. In theMini Grom final, Evan Geiselman wasted no time getting in the grooveripping his first wave all the way to the sand scoring a near perfect9.0. He earned another good 7.5 score which sealed the deal and hisfirst NSSA Eastern title.

THE NATIONAL CHAMPION IN THE SPOTLIGHT AGAIN: Defending National OpenWomen’s and Governor’s Cup Champion Karina Petroni confirmed that she isstill the force to be reckoned with this June at Lowers. She destroyedboth the Open andxplorer finals adding another two NSSA Championshiptitles under her belt. In the Open final, she nearly doubled heropponent’s scores posting an 8.0 and 7.0. It was the same story in theExplorer final as she combo’ed her rivals with wave scores of 7.0 and6.5. She’s obviously got what it takes to make a serious challenge atthe Nationals for back-to-back titles.

O’NEILL NSSA AIRSHOW CHAMPIONSHIPS: Conditions for the airshowpreliminary rounds were small but there was enough juice to produce afew good ramps. Alek Parker pulled a big frontside standard air in theairshow quarterfinals earning an 8.0 score which was the high scoringair of the event. In the final, Dan Cruden, Max Doucet, JeremyJohnston, Blake Jones and Jesse Heilman joined Alek. Although it wasn’tthe best flight conditions, the finalists made the best of it waitingpatiently for some decent ramps. Jesse Heilman pulled a frontsidestandard air earning a 5.5 score and the airshow gold. He was also theonly aerialist to pull off two airs in the final. Jesse will lead hisfellow east coast finalists to the O’Neill National AirshowChampionships at Salt Creek on June 20-21 joining the top six from theWest and Hawaii.

HOBGOODS HONORED: Former NSSA east coast standouts CJ Hobgood and DamienHobgood were presented lifetime memberships to the NSSA. CJ and Damienbegan competing in the NSSA in 1989. During their 9 years in NSSA, CJand Damien earned many NSSA conference and regional titles along withtwo National titles apiece. They were NSSA surfer/scholars throughouttheir NSSA years with GPA’s hovering in the high 3’s. Although CJ andDamien did not continue formal education after graduating high school in1998, they understood the importance of education and the NSSA’s goal ofproviding financial assistance to our scholastic achievers. Over thepast five years, CJ and Damien have donated thousands of dollars ofscholarship funds to worthy NSSA surfers with the dreams of continuingtheir education.

OTHER REWARDS!: 1999 Eastern Open Men’s and Explorer Juniors ChampionPhillip Watters presented the Open Boys Champion Eric Templeton and OpenMini Grom Champion Evan Geiselman with a check paying for their entryinto the NSSA National Open Championships. COOL! Nine-year- oldMichael Ciaramella was the lucky grom that won an authentic Hobgoodsurfboard in our annual Hobgood surfboard giveaway at the NSSAEasterns. Michael was the first ever-Mini Grom from the NSSA’sNortheast Conference to make the Mini Grom final. The board waspresented at the Easterns awards banquet and needless to say, Michaeldidn’t let go of that board the entire evening!
