HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.,- July 10, 2002 The O’Neill Grom Prix kicked off at 8:00 am in Huntington Beach at Golden West street with clean 2 to 4 foot South West swells and 71 degree water.
The entire Golden West area was dominated by groms before the event, which made the surf look like it was 6 to 8 feet instead of 2 to 4 feet.
The stand- outs in the event were Mason Ho, son of Hawaiian legend Mike Ho, Chase Newsome of Huntington Beach, and Kollohe Andino, son of multiple USA championships Dino Andino.
This was Kollohe Andino first contest and the results were great. He placed first in the 10 & under and sixth in the 13 & under.
The most radical maneuver was done by Mason Ho, who boosted a giant air in the 13 and under final. The double finalist awards went to Mason Ho and Kollohe Andino. Both boys had their fathers on the beach in smiles.
Other father son surfing combos consisted of David Giddings and his boys Joshua and Adison. Garth Tarlow and his son Tyler also participated in the father son surf.
The next Grom Prix will be held in Oceanside Ca. on the 25th of July. We look forward to seeing you all their.
