SANTA CRUZ, Calif., May 29, 2002- The 2002 O’Neill Grom Prix Surf Series kicked off at Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz on Saturday May 18th.

Under crystal clear blue sky?s fresh 3-4ft. South West swell gave the groms something to sink their teeth into; allowing almost every kid to get the max wave limit (10 waves) per heat.

13-year-old super grom Winner Austin Smith-Ford put on an amazing performance scoring one of the days highest scores and biggest moves early in round one. Smith-Ford claimed a 9pt ride by nailing a clean front-side air after doing three solid turns to set it up.

Other performers were Progression Session winner Matt Schrodetz who sealed his win with a backside air and cutback 360 on back-to-back waves. Mark Weibe put on a solid performance claiming the win in the 14-16 division.

With time to spare and a few pros eager to surf, a Pro Am heat was drawn in order to give the groms a break and check out a couple of pro’s surf. In the end it was Bud Freitas who narrowly beat out Noi Kaulukukui to claim the hundred-dollar prize.

Special thanks to O’Neill, Smith, Ocean Minded, X-trax, and Santa Cruz Skate/Surfboards for all the great prizes.
