Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Expression Session
Two-Time World Champion Tom Carroll; Chris Ward; Laurie Towner, and Christian Fletcher Excel in Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Expression Session
Perfect Waves Predicted for 10th Anniversary of Invitational
Padang Padang, Bali, Indonesia, Tuesday, August 6th 2013: The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang almost got the green light in Bali on Tuesday as the mythical lefthander began to pulse with 4– 6ft (2 metre) barrels from a powerful new Indian Ocean swell.
For the second time in the event's six-week waiting period (July 1st – August 15th) the invitational went on "High Alert" for a possible start but both surfers and organizers opted to stage the expression session instead. Conditions not quite perfect enough to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the legendary tube-riding event – which is now predicted to run in pumping Padang waves this weekend.
Former two-time world champion Tom Carroll (Newport, Sydney, Aus) is amongst the 32 invitee's and proved at 51 he can still slot into a Padang Padang barrel. The goofy-footer who encountered the wrath of the reef break in 1980 said he was excited to be back at the infamous break.
Australia's big wave surfer Laurie Towner (Angourie, NSW, Aus) slotted into one of day's best pits on the dropping afternoon tide. The twenty-six year-old admitted to being torn between staying in Bali with perfect waves predicted or heading over to Tahiti for the Teahupoo Trials.
Defending event champion Chris Ward (USA) won the 2012 Rip Curl Pro Padang Padang Cup with a perfect ten point ride last year over an international field of tube-riding specialists including Jamie O’Brien (Haw), defending champion Lee Wilson (Bali), local legend Rizal Tanjung (Bali), Ozzie Wright (Aus), and the event’s first-ever female competitor, Bethany Hamilton (Haw).
Thirty-four year-old Ward has returned to Padang Padang with fiancée Michele and their four-month old son C.J and was in sensational form in today's expression session. An inspired Ward, who proposed on stage to Michele after his victory last year, showcased his backside ability today and said Padang Padang he was looking forward to the predicted swell.
2012 runner-up Rizal Tunjung (IND) was just one of the many Indonesian standouts in the expression session with local surfers turning on an amazing display of tube-riding prowess at Padang Padang. Bali surfing legend Tunjung predicted the event would commence on the weekend.
The Padang barrel didn’t phase legendary Californian surfing character Christian Fletcher (USA) who wound his way through some of the day's best tubes without so much as getting a hair out of place. The 42 year-old said he preferred the more dangerous low tide conditions.
With nine days remaining in the event waiting period, the attention of the surfing world now turns to this weekend’s upcoming swell, which looks to be bigger and more powerful than Tuesday’s expression session swell.

About The Rip Curl Cup
The Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is Indonesia's longest-running surfing competition and the first invitational contest to feature top international surfers alongside Indonesia's best. The field of 32 surfers is split equally between 16 of Indonesia's all-time greatest and 16 of the world's best barrel riders. This invitational format, along with the allure of the wave at Padang and a $10,000 prize purse, makes the Rip Curl Cup the most anticipated event of the Indonesian surf season.
For the ten-year anniversary of Padang Cup, Rip Curl has extended the event waiting period to a grand total of six weeks to ensure catching an epic swell for the "one-day, one-swell" event. This year’s window will run from July 1st through Aug. 15th and the contest will be run entirely on one epic day. When contest directors see an ideal "Padang swell" in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to Bali's Bukit Peninsula.
For the first time in history, the Rip Curl Cup will be webcast live to the world. Watch all the action LIVE at live.ripcurl.com or on your smartphone with the Rip Curl Live Events App.
