It was a messy start to the Rip Curl Pro Portugal today for the men. Supertubos was the call and things were still all over the place, unlike yesterday for Carissa Moore’s victory over Steph Gilmore at Laigde. But there were still some gems out there—like Tommy Whitaker’s 9.50, and Dusty Payne’s whole heat (16.57). Supertubos only allowed for the first nine heats of Round 1 to be comleted before things got way too messy. Owen Wright, Matt Wilko, Gabe Kling, and Mick Fanning were all standouts as well. The swell they’ve got over there is supposed to clean up for tomorrow, so some serious contest surfing could be going down Monday bright and early. Stay tuned to transworldsurf.com for full coverage, and make sure you watch the event live at live.ripcurl.com.
