Competition Postponed Due To Small Surf

April 15, 2003 (Bells Beach, VIC, Australia) The 2003 Rip Curl Pro was todaypostponed due to small, unfavorable surf conditions. Organizers initiallyplaced the US$250,000 World Championship Tournament (WCT) on hold until 11am(local time), as a major swell increase is expected, but ultimately it wasdecided to wait until tomorrow morning.

Waves are currently 2-3ft (1m) at Bells Beach. Strong onshore southwestwinds and rain picked up their intensity this morning, indicating more swellactivity is headed this way.

Two-time world and Rip Curl Pro champion Damien Hardman (Aus), who now holdsthe title and responsibility of competition director for this year’stournament, is confident the highly anticipated event will commence withround one action tomorrow.

“The swell we predicted is about 12 hours behind schedule,” explainedHardman. “The weather change has come through, so we’re expecting to starttomorrow morning.”

The 2003 Rip Curl Pro has a 12-day waiting period, yet only requires fourdays of competition to decide this year’s champion. While the naturalamphitheatre at Bells Beach and the epic waves of the ‘Bowl’ and inside’Rincon’ sections will be the main site, the event is fully mobile. If thereis no contestable surf at Bells, competition can be moved to the adjacentbreak at Winki Pop, or to the magical beach breaks of Johanna about twohours drive west of Bells, or the similarly renowned Gunnamatta beachbreaks, on the Mornington peninsula, east of Bells.

The Rip Curl Pro would not be possible without the combined efforts of thedifferent groups involved in the event’s staging – Surfing Victoria; TheSurf Coast Shire Council; the Victorian Government Department of Tourism,Sport & The Commonwealth Games; and the Association of Surfing Professionals(ASP) – plus the supporting sponsorship of Lifesavers, Ansell, Coca-Cola,Vodka Cruiser, Falls Creek, Fudge & Tooheys.
