South Africa’s Best Surfers Raring To Go In Tuberiding Extravaganza
Professional surfers throughout South Africa are raring to go in the 2002 Rip Curl Tuberiders event that is being held over a 10 day waiting period from 21 June to 1 July at Durban’s famed reef break, Cave Rock, on the Bluff. It will be the open division surfer’s first opportunity to rack up valuable ASP Africa Pro Surf Tour (PST) points that count towards crowning the year end professional surfing champions.
“We are pleased to confirm that the event has been finalized, hopefully the big swell that has been punishing the Bluff’s shores will continue and we look forward to a really exciting event,” commented Director of Rip Curl SA Mike Larmont.Top competitors throughout the country are eager to take to the water to showcase their barrel riding skills in their bid to win the prestigious title and a wildcard entry into THE famed Trails event as part of the 2003 Rip Curl Pro at Bell’s Beach.
And after much deliberation the Rip Curl Tuberiders’ wildcards have been announced; the list includes the cream of the South African crop, a legendary south coast soul surfer as well as four rising stars. World Championship Tour (WCT) surfer Paul Canning (Dbn) heads the line up with Warner beach sensation Frankie Oberholzer. Talented juniors Warwick Wright (Dbn), Ricky Basnett (Bluff), Daniel Redman (Dbn) and Cordell Venter (Ballito) also made the cut. The six wildcards will be seeded into the main event of the Rip Curl Tuberiders that is being held at the famous Cave Rock reef break on the Bluff. The event is the first stop on the 2002 ASP Africa Pro Surf Tour (PST) Open’s calendar with a window period from June 21 to July 1.
“I think it is really good that so many juniors have been chosen, last year we gave the opens a run (for their money) with Daniel and me in the semi’s and Ricky in the quarterfinals. Not many people know of Cordell but I’ve seen him around and reckon he could be the dark horse, this is his kind of contest – he charges and is a good tube rider,” commented top junior Wright on the selection of the wildcards.Canning (26) will put his finely honed barrel riding skills on his backhand to test in local waters. Top juniors Wright (17) and Basnett (16) who recently placed first and second at the Quiksilver ISA World Surfing Games in the junior division will get the opportunity to take on competitors almost twice their age and possibly bruise a few egos. Daniel Redman (18) was a semi-finalist at the 2001 Rip Curl Tuberiders and looks set to better this result with his wildcard berth. Venter (16) has been a member of the South African Academy Team as well as winning numerous Ballito contests and could prove to be the dark horse by knocking out some big guns at the prestigious tournament.
There is a prize purse of R10 000 and the champion of the Rip Curl Tuberiders will gain a wildcard entry into the Trials as part of the 2003 Rip Curl Pro at Bell’s Beach.
The opening function is to be held at the Rip Curl Bar in Durban (old Gringos – corner of Kearsney Rd and West Street) at 17h30 on Thursday, 20 June.
