Huntington Beach, California, October 10, 2001 (NYSE: ZQK) Roxy/Quiksilver is proud to present the 5th Annual Roxy Wahine Classic, an all-girls longboard surfing event open to girls of all ages and abilities. The festivities begin with a registration party scheduled for Friday, October 12, and continue with the contest running Saturday, October 13 through Sunday, October 14, 2001 at “Old Man’s,” San Onofre State Beach. The gentle Waikiki style waves favored by surfers since the 1930’s make San Onofre the perfect staging site for this fun event. The Roxy Wahine Classic is a continuation of the ‘Aloha Spirit’ shared by generations of San Onofre families. Our goal is for the entry level young women surfers competing in perhaps their first surfing contest to have as an enjoyable experience as possible,” says event producer, Allan Seymour.
The registration party on Friday, October 12, kicks off the weekend’s events with an evening filled with excitement, anticipation and inspiration. Contestants, Roxy professional surfers and team riders will arrive at 6:00 pm to register and collect gift bags. Dinner, catered by Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, will be served at 6:30 pm. A special presentation of Roxy/XX Production’s new surf film “7 Girls” will screen from 7:00-7:30 pm. At this time guest speaker, Roxy team rider, philanthropist and role model, Sarah Gerhardt, will present an inspirational speech for the participants and guests. Gerhardt, among many impressive accomplishments, is the only woman thus far to surf the treacherous, 50 + foot waves of Mavericks, the northern California surf break infamous for claiming the life of Hawaiian surf legend Mark Foo. In addition to conquering giant waves, 28-year-old Gerhardt is currently working on a PhD in chemistry at the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Sarah is one of the many wonderful girls in the Roxy family of athletes who will be on hand to offer surf tips, and encouragement to all the participants of the event. Roxy team riders expected to attend include Cristiana Janssen, Kassia Meador, Tanya Booth, Nani Naish, Lauren Ward, Shannon MacIntyre, Lyn-Z Adams, and Jenny Groshans.
The contest begins on Saturday, October 13 at 7:00 am. Lunch will be served by the Hawaiian Surfing Club at noon.
The contest ends with an awards ceremony presented by the Roxy team at 4:00 pm. Senior Women, Masters, and Grand Masters heats will run throughout the day. The Menehune (ages13-14), Teenie Weenie Wahines (ages12 & under) and Junior Women ( ages15-19) will run throughout the day on Sunday October 14.
Surf lessons are available for interested members of the press per request.
