Wade Tokoro with Mick Fanning.
Torquay, Australia / 15 December 2008: Rip Curl is thrilled to announce that world-renown surfboard shaper and designer Wade Tokoro has officially joined the international brand’s surfboard shaping program. Tokoro, who has been designing boards for 2007 ASP World Champion Mick Fanning for over eight years, is one of the world’s most respected craftsman and is an exciting addition to the Rip Curl stable.
“We’re very excited about the partnership with Wade,” says Chris Rowley, Rip Curl Surfboards Product Manager. “Rip Curl is committed to its roots – which come from making the best surfboards – and Wade is the perfect addition to our shaping team. He is one of the most influential shapers today, his boards are underfoot of top pro surfers and core surfers worldwide.”
Tokoro, who is based out of Hawaii, will join fellow shapers Darren Handley, Gunther Rohn and Maurice Cole in Rip Curl Surfboards.
“I’m very happy to be working with Rip Curl and am excited that my first offering of designs were created especially and specifically for Rip Curl,” said Tokoro. “These models were created to meet the needs of all surfers. The designs are great for beginners and professionals alike, because my goal is to make a board that you can easily surf and have fun with.”
Tokoro is constantly working on improving his designs, while continually refining his existing models that have worked well in the water. His relationship with professional surfers is second-to-none, so he uses their valuable feedback – along with his own “research and development” – to inspire his new surfboard designs.
“Wade’s boards are so smooth and easy to ride, they make surfing really enjoyable,” said Fanning. “He also surfs really good, which is invaluable for a shaper. He charges big Pipeline and is also very good in small waves. It always helps to have a shaper that can surf well to work with.”
This Tokoro partnership is for a complete range of boards exclusive to Rip Curl and available throughout stores worldwide. The range will include everything from shortboards to semi guns through to serious big wave boards.
