SIMA Estimates Waterman’s Weekend Raised $340,000 For Environmental Charities

While they don’t have concrete numbers just yet, SIMA (Surf Industry Manufacturers Association) estimates that the Waterman’s Weekend, held August 27-28, 2004 at the Monarch Beach Resort raised over $340,000 for environmental ocean-minded charities. If their numbers are accurate, that would mean in the last three year (2002-2004) the weekend has raised a sum total of $926,000 to help keep the oceans clean and to protect surf spots from destruction. The Waterman’s Weekend consisted of the Waterman’s Classic Golf Tournament on Friday August 27, which was played in by more than 160 golfers, and the Waterman’s Ball and Auction on the evening of Saturday August 28, with a capacity attendance of 850.

According to a SIMA press release sent out Monday, the money raised will be distributed in the form of grants to ten environmental organizations: Surfrider Foundation, Ocean Institute, Wildcoast, Heal The Bay, Orange County CoastKeeper, Surfing Education Association, Alaska Wilderness League, Seymour Marine Discovery Center, Algalita Marine Research Foundation, and Save the Waves Coalition.
