HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — April 18, 2005 — Surfing America, the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of Surfing in the United States, today announced that the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (“SIMA) has signed on as Presenting Sponsor of the 2005 USA Championships and USA Surf Team Selection event.
The 2005 Surfing America USA Championships presented by SIMA will run from Monday, June 27th — Saturday, July 2nd on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.
“This is a major development for Surfing America and its National Governing Body program, said Mike Gerard, Surfing America’s executive director. “We’re very pleased SIMA has seized this high profile opportunity to showcase its support. While we have several major surf brands onboard as Official Sponsors, SIMA’s involvement as Presenting Sponsor of the USA Championships brings industry-wide endorsement and creates an opportunity for some of the smaller brands to get involved. We look forward to maintaining a close relationship with SIMA as we continue to build the future of American surfing.
“SIMA has been the major supporter of Surfing America since its inception and since acquiring the NGB a year ago, Surfing America’s credibility has grown significantly, said Dick Baker, SIMA president and president of apparel maker Op. “We see the USA Championships —in Surf City USATM during 4th of July week—as a tremendous platform for the surf industry to show their collective support of the development of young competitive surfers in America. SIMA is proud of the progress Surfing America and the USA Surf Team have made since last spring and we look forward to supporting this prestigious event for years to come.
After being appointed NGB last spring, Surfing America held its first USA Championship event in Huntington Beach last summer. The resultant USA Surf Team then went to Tahiti in December for the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships and made a strong statement to the international surfing community by bringing home the Silver Medal.

The Surfing America USA Championships presented by SIMA takes the program to a whole new level. It sends the message that Surfing America is on solid ground and sets the stage for future success. We’d like to thank Surfing America’s Member Organizations: ESA, HASA, NSSA, TGSA, and WSA for their hard work and collective efforts on behalf of the sport and its athletes.
