Smith Sport Optics Presents The First Annual Garden State Grudge Match
Top New Jersey Surfers Will Battle for Bragging Rights October 12 in Seaside Heights.
Smith Sport Optics Presents The First Annual Garden State Grudge Match KETCHUM, Idaho, October 10, 2002 – Smith Sport Optics in conjunction with Globe, Da Kine, and Surf Taco has announced the 1st Annual Garden State Grudge Match, a surf competition that will feature 20 of New Jersey’s top pros competing for bragging rights, a $2,500 purse and title belt. The competition will take place October 12 at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, N.J.
The Garden State Grudge Match, conceptualized by tri-state area Smith, Globe and Da Kine reps Rob Cloupe and Rob Zseleczky, will utilize a unique format with no seeding. To determine the combatants in each heat, surfers will pick their man on man competitors out of a hat. Competition begins at 8 a.m. Already confirmed to compete are Dean Randazzo, Frank Walsh, Sam Hammer, Matt Keenan, and Ryan Kimmel.
“Surfing needs some rivalries and the state of New Jersey couldn’t be a better place to start,” said Cloupe. “This event pushes alternative surfing and different formats to make the competition more appealing and exciting to the public. With the lottery and man on man format anything can happen, the best two guys can duke it out in the 1st round. Guys in the local shops are already buzzing about who will take top honors. In this competition, second place is the first loser.”
