Spyder Surfboards Presents the King of the South Bay Surfing Championships Saturday May 21st @ Manhattan Beach Pier
5/17/11 – The fifth and final stop for the South Bay Boardriders Club "King of the South Bay" Contest Series is set for Saturday May 21st at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The previous 4 events have been fantastic successes. For the championships Spyder Surfboards is taking the event up a notch. The biggest additions will be live computerized scoring combined with professional announcing taking place from atop scaffolding so that the competitors in the water will be able to know exactly what their ranking is as each 15 minute heat ticks away.
"We're really excited to see how this contest goes. The Spyder Surfboards guys are producing this contest the same way that today's professional contests are done. It should be pretty cool for 9 year old groms to hear their name announced over the loudspeaker and see their score posted on the computer just like the professionals do on the webcasts from around the world" said South Bay Boardriders Club President Mike Balzer.
The contest features over 200 competitors in 10 different divisions – Men, Women, Boys and Girls from 8 to 60 years old. Professional surfer Matt Pagan from Culver City currently leads the most competitive Open Men's division, while ex-professional and former South Bay resident Ted Robinson leads the crowd favorite Master's division. Natalie Anzivino of Redondo Beach leads the Open Women's division. On the line are trips to Central America from AST Sports Tours and Cash and product prizes from Volcom, Spy Sunglasses and Body Glove Wetsuits. El Gringo restaurant provides food for the competitors and there will be free games and fun on the beach all day from all the sponsors.
The first heat hits the water at 7am.
