Although the ASP Women’s World Tour competition was put on hold today due to the small surf on offer at Dee Why, the finest women’s surfers took to the water for the Oakley Earth Challenge. Fans witnessed Australian members of the ASP Women’s World Tour go head to head with fellow TOP 17 members from around the world.
It was the power team from Australia who stole victory in the dying minutes of the 40 minute challenge. Two time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, 2005 ASP World Champion Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 25, defending event champion Tyler Wright, 15, 7 time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley 37, and Rebecca Woods (AUS), 25, only had eyes for the “Ashes of Surfing” trophy and put together a fine team effort while enjoying some fun competition amongst their friends and fellow competitors.
“The odds were stacked against us as the World had us needing a combination score but in classic Aussie style we kept fight to the end to claim the Ashes,” said Layne Beachley.
