Surf Industry Manufacturers Association Names New Executive DirectorSAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (September 8, 2004) – The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) announced today the appointment and promotion of Sean Smith to the position of executive director. SIMA has also hired a new communications specialist to handle its public relations initiatives.

Smith begins his new role as executive director of SIMA after serving as the association’s managing director since January 2003. Prior to joining SIMA staff in 2001 as director of marketing and communications, Smith was the director of marketing for the Action Sports Group of magazines now owned by Primedia where he oversaw the marketing and public relations efforts for magazines such as Surfer, Snowboarder and Skateboarder. His prior experience also includes serving as a public relations specialist for the tourism board in central Florida and marketing manager for Golfweek, a national weekly golf publication.

“The board of directors is proud to promote Sean to the position of executive director, said Dick Baker, SIMA president and president of apparel maker Op. “Sean has been an integral part of SIMA’s growth and expansion during recent years — his experience and knowledge of the industry make him an invaluable asset to our association. He has helped bring SIMA to the next level and we look forward to pursuing new opportunities to grow SIMA and the industry under his leadership.

As executive director, Smith will increase his operational duties for the association and continue to manage the daily activities and initiatives to help strengthen SIMA’s role in the industry. Former SIMA executive director, Terry McCann, retired during the summer of 2004 after serving three years in the position.

“I’m truly honored to be taking on this new role at SIMA, especially following in the footsteps of Terry, said Smith. “SIMA has come a long way under the leadership of Terry, Dick Baker and the entire board of directors. They are responsible for making SIMA more relevant to the industry over the past three years. The SIMA staff plans to continue growing the association’s importance and value to the membership by expanding vital programs such as education and member benefits.

In addition to promoting Smith to executive director, SIMA hired Jennifer Harris as the association’s communications specialist. Harris brings a strong public relations background and knowledge of trade association business to SIMA. Her experience includes working at two of the top-ranked public relations agencies in Orange County, most recently as an account executive for a specialty automotive trade association client. Prior to her public relations agency experience, Harris worked at the marketing manager for the House of Blues Anaheim.

Harris will be responsible for handling SIMA’s public relations initiatives, developing marketing materials, creating the quarterly newsletter and maintaining the association’s web site. Harris replaces Megan Tompkins, who left SIMA to return to her roots at Bicycle Retailer & Industry News magazine.

The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) is the official working trade association of more than 300 surf industry suppliers. Founded in 1989, SIMA is a non-profit organization that serves to promote awareness of the surf industry and participation in the sport of surfing through public relations efforts and a variety of services, educational programs and research. In addition, SIMA actively supports oceanic environmental efforts through its 501(c)(3) charitable environmental foundation, the SIMA Environmental Fund. In the past 14 years, SIMA’s Environmental Fund has raised more than $2.3 million for environmental groups seeking to protect the world’s oceans, beaches and waves.
