LandShark Spring Surfari Pro
April 1- 5, 2009 at New Smyrna Inlet
$20,000 Purse, Open to all Pro-Am Surfers
The Surfari Pro Contest Committee announced today that the LandShark Spring Surfari Pro will take place April 1-5 at the world-famous New Smyrna Inlet surf break, on the south side of Florida's Ponce De Leon Inlet, in Volusia County.
The tournament will mark the return of professional surfing to the well-known site for the first time since the ASP Aloe-Up Cup, in 1989, won by Hawaiian, John Shimooka. Other events held in New Smyrna during that era include the 1988 Gotcha Fall Surfari, won by current nine-time World Champion Kelly Slater, of Cocoa Beach, who won one of his first Pro titles there while still in High School.
The LandShark Pro will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Smyrna Surfari Club, a non-profit, public service surfing club that was founded to provide college scholarships to surfers from the local High School.
LandShark Lager, a division of Anheuser-Busch and partner of Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville", will be making their first foray into the Pro Surfing arena, as the major sponsor of the contest. "We are thrilled that LandShark has stepped up to sponsor this new event, even as many sports have had to cut back during these tough times", said Matt Clancy, Surfari Club Co-Chairman. "We think it shows an important commitment to young surfing student-athletes. The club also wanted to give an opportunity to the many world-ranked local surfers to compete for prize-money at their home break."
ASP-rated surfers (Association of Professional Surfers) from Volusia County who are expected to compete include Aaron Cormican, Eric and Evan Geiselman, Devon Tresher, Nils Schweizer, Jeremy Johnston, Jesse Heilman, and Liam Michelbrink.
Falling as it does on the spring surfing schedule between events in Huntington Beach, California and Cocoa Beach, Florida, promoters expect a large contingent of entries from California and Puerto Rico, as well as the cream of East Coast surfers.
In addition to major support from LandShark, the Southeast Volusia Advertising Authority has committed sponsorship to advertise the new event nationally and coordinate accommodation requests for visiting surfers and spectators.
"We expect no less than a hundred competitors to participate during the five-day event", said
Co-Chairman, Doug Feindt "We have built two possible off-days into the schedule to allow for weather and surf conditions."
Now that the event has been finalized there has been interest in additional sponsorship opportunities. "We have seen a lot of interest from local business, as well as smaller Presenting Sponsors", said Sponsorship Coordinator, Karen Clancy. Sponsorship inquiries should be directed to Karen at: email@example.com.
Entry fee for the contest will be $125 for a share of the $20,000 purse
The Official Surf Shop will be Inlet Charleys, 510 Flagler Avenue, New Smyrna Beach (386) 423-2317. Information and entries can be accessed on their website: inletcharleys.com.
