SURFING AMERICA INTRODUCES THE 2012 PACSUN USA SURF TEAM
UNDER 18 SQUAD ANNOUNCED SATURDAY NIGHT AT SPECIAL FUNDRAISING EVENT PRESENTED BY NIKE 6.0
San Juan Capistrano, Calif. – June 29, 2011 – Surfing America, the national governing body for surfing in the United States, is pleased to introduce the 2012 PacSun USA Surf Team.
This year’s announcement was made at a special event called “Surfing Americana presented by Nike 6.0” that was held at a luxury estate on Cotton’s Point in San Clemente, CA on the evening of June 25. This was the final day of the 2011 Quiksilver USA Championships, held at Lower Trestles, CA.
The sold out event hosted athletes and their families as well as industry leaders and friends and supporters of the Surfing America cause. The evening included live music, a buffet dinner, silent auction, and a special presentation of Nike 6.0’s latest surf film, Leave a Message.
A NEW APPROACH
In a change of programming from years’ past, Surfing America has introduced the actual 12 surfers who will make up the traveling team to next year’s 2012 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. The Team roster consists of four athletes in each of the three competition Divisions: Boys Under 18, Boys Under 16, and Girls Under 18.
While there are alternates named in each division on the USA squad, these alternates will only be eligible for a position on the traveling team if one of the traveling athletes gets injured or is not able to attend next year’s event. In this case, the alternates in the affected division will surf off for the open spot.
“We think that picking the actual traveling team now will bring more focus to training and much needed competitive skill development,” said Ian Cairns, PacSun USA Surf Team Head Coach.
Cairns added, “We are extraordinarily lucky to have both Kolohe Andino and Lakey Peterson back to anchor our Under 18 Men’s and Women’s Teams and although very young, our Under 16 Men’s squad, lead by Kanoa Igarashi, has great depth and talent.” Special guests at the event included ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, who personally addressed the crowd about the importance of representing your country in international surfing events and how the sport of surfing truly brings the world together in the spirit of peace and community.
