February 1, 2000, San Francisco, Calif — Quokka Sports (Nasdaq: QKKA), the digital sports entertainment company, announced today that it is delivering immersive sports coverage of eight surfers intending to be the first people ever to ride the huge, frigid, cold waters of Antarctica, the “Unsurfed Continent.” On February 1, 2000, these eight intrepid surfers will embark on a 24-day sailing expedition from the tip of South America to Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands, to surf waves where they originate. By logging onto www.quokka.com from February 1 through February 24, viewers can watch as these highly-experienced surfers ride the icy waves of the Southern Ocean.
Quokka’s online coverage will track the surfers as they conquer the raging cold-water waves of Antarctica, bringing viewers the intense live daily coverage that it brought to fans during National Geographic’s Climbing Cameroon expedition and the Eco-Challenge. Visitors to www.quokka.com will be able to follow the journey through the eyes of the surfers–through still photographs, emails and audio dispatches sent via satellite to Quokka.com. Following Quokka.com’s coverage of the GMC Yukon Key West Race Week in January, the Surfing Antarctica expedition in February is just one more of the exciting events Quokka has planned for the year. Quokka.com is a one-stop destination that delivers intense, in-depth event coverage to a wide array of sports online.
“The Surfing Antarctica expedition is exactly the type of event we strive to cover on Quokka.com, where we deliver stories of athletes around the world who beat the odds, expand the boundaries and capture the spirit of human endeavor in sport,” said Brian Terkelsen, general manager, Quokka.com. “These surfers are embarking upon one of the most intense surfing adventures that they have ever known and Quokka.com is there to deliver the stories.²
The surfers are being lead by Dr. Mark Renneker, co-founder of the Surfer’s Medical Association. Renneker is a board-certified family physician. Also going along as lead journalist and chronicler of the expedition is Steve Hawk of El Granada, California, former editor of Surfer Magazine. Sedge Thomson, best known as the host of West Coast Live, a nationally syndicated radio show airing on National Public Radio, also joins the group.
Part of their journey is to engage in environmental research. While theparticipants on the expedition will be exploring the surf-exposed Antarcticislands for points and reefs that offer rideable waves, they will also focusattention upon gaining an understanding of the Antarctic marine environment andsharing this understanding with surfers across the world.
The Surfing Antarctica expedition team will cast off from Ushuaia, Argentina, and cross the Drake Passage on the Golden Fleece, a 65-foot, steel-hulled sailboat skippered by legendary Southern Ocean sailor Jerome Poncet. Renneker’s 38 years of surfing experience combined with his medical background, provide the leadership qualities necessary for an expedition of this magnitude. Also included with the eight participants on the expedition are professional surfers such as Chris Malloy and longtime surf photographer Art Brewer.
